Hawley Students Celebrate Reading The Hamster Way
Some students entering Hawley Elementary Schoolâs gymnasium on Friday, October 29, were ready in costume to celebrate this yearâs One School One Read book, Life According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney.
Humphrey, a hamster, narrates the novel and describes life as a classroom pet. On Friday, school faculty and staff were also ready to celebrate the culmination of the one-month event, in costume and on stage with a skit.
Hawleyâs One School One Read event was kicked off on October 4, with another skit. The One School One Read program gives each student the chance to read the same book over the course of one month at the school. Activities are completed in the classrooms, packets are sent home to parents, and special events are held in the school as part of the program. Sandy Hook School also kicked off its One School One Read program this week. (See the related story in this weekâs Bee.)
Last yearâs One School One Read book at Hawley was The Trumpet Of The Swan, by E.B. White.
