Newtown Parent Connection Slates Forum On Risky Behaviors
Dr Joanna L. Rosen, a licensed clinical psychologist with a private psychology practice in Newtown, will lead Newtown Parent Connectionâs next forum on Tuesday, November 9, from 7 to 9 pm, at Newtown Middle School with âIdentifying Risk and Building Resilience in Children, Teens, and Families.â
Dr Rosenâs presentation will focus on how parents can work individually as well as within the family and greater community to reduce the risk for substance use and other mental health difficulties.
Prevention, according to Dr Rosen, is a concept parents practice every day.
The evening will begin with a discussion of how parenting and prevention work hand-in-hand before turning to a detailed description of those risk factors that have been identified to increase a young personâs vulnerability to substance use.
Finally, Dr Rosen will talk about those protective factors that have been identified to reduce vulnerability to substance use, even if risk factors are present.
Dr Rosen will also detail specific information about signs and symptoms which, if present, may indicate that a young person is currently experiencing either substance use or emotional difficulties. Information on how to respond if difficulties are present will follow.
In addition to her clinical office in Newtown, Dr Rosen is currently an assistant clinical professor at the Yale University School Medicine. She received her bachelor of arts degree in psychology and English in 1992 from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
She went on to acquire her master and doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Yeshiva University in Bronx, N.Y., in 1999.
From 1999 until 2001, Dr Rosen was a postdoctoral fellow in clinical psychology at Yale University in New Haven.
In addition to her current position as assistant clinical professor and career as a clinical psychologist, Dr Rosen is the past associate clinical director of the PRIME (Prevention through Risk Identification, Management and Education) Research Clinic at Yale.
