Stephen E. Bennett passed away quietly on October 7, 2024, after a protracted illness. He was born in Concord, New Hampshire on November 4, 1943, and raised on the family farm in Henniker, N.H. Steve graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1965 with a degree in electrical engineering. It was there where he met the love of his life — his wife, Janet, to whom he was married for 59 years.

Steve served in the United States Air Force from 1966-1970, having achieved the rank of Captain. He worked at the MIT Research Lab outside of Boston, helping to develop equipment used by pilots during the Vietnam War. Upon his discharge from the service, Steve worked for Union Carbide for 25 years, during which time he earned his MBA degree.

In 1982, Steve moved with his wife to Newtown to raise a family. He became an integral part of the community, and was a long-time member of Newtown Congregational Church, where he frequently volunteered. He was active in Newtown Lions Club and Families United in Newtown, as well as with the Red Cross and Salvation Army.

Steve was a loving husband and devoted father, survived by his wife Janet, daughter Christina, brother Spencer, and sister Judy, along with many nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service with military honors at Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street, on Sunday, November 10, at 2 pm, for family and friends. All are welcome to attend. A reception in the Great Room of the church will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Newtown Congregational Church or Newtown Lions Club.
