NHS Spikers Advance In Five; Booters Fall To Barlow
Newtown High School’s girls’ volleyball team overcame 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to defeat visiting Pomperaug of Southbury 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-19, 15-11) in the South-West Conference tournament quarterfinals on November 2.
Jamie Calandro had 24 kills and 21 digs, Molly McCoy had six aces, nine kills, and 20 assists, and Kaitlyn Schneider had seven aces to go along with four digs.
Newtown is the fourth-seeded team, and Pomperaug was seeded fifth. The teams also played a five-game match in the regular season, in early October, which the Nighthawks won.
With the win, the Nighthawks advance to face to top-seeded Joel Barlow of Redding in the semifinals. The match will take place at neutral site Pomperaug High on Tuesday, November 3, beginning at 7 pm.
The winner will take on either second-seeded Weston or No. 6 Notre Dame-Fairfield. In the regular season, Newtown met Barlow twice and won the first matchup in three games, before dropping the second meeting in three.
Boys’ Soccer Team Falls
The Newtown High boys’ soccer team lost its SWC tourney semifinal-round game; the third-seeded Nighthawks fell 3-0 to No. 2 Barlow, at neutral site Weston High on November 2. Corey Levine scored all three goals. This marks the second year in a row that the Nighthawks defeated Barlow twice in the regular campaign before falling to the Falcons in the conference playoffs.
Barlow advances to face fourth-seeded Bethel in the Wednesday, November 4 championship game, which will be held at Newtown High’s Blue & Gold Stadium, beginning at 7 pm. Newtown will return to action in the state playoffs; seedings will be announced on casciac.org on Friday, November 6.
