Team Record Set As Swimmers Compete In SWC Meet
WESTON — Newtown High School's girls' swimming and diving team had quite a showing in the South-West Conference Championships.
The Nighthawks had a team record and first-place finishes in four events as the team placed fourth.
Swimming events were held at Weston High on November 2; they were originally scheduled to take place at Masuk High in Monroe but moved to Weston Middle School due to a mechanical issue with Masuk's pool. The diving competition took place October 30 at New Fairfield High.
Pomperaug of Southbury won the team championship with a score of 562, Weston was second with 436, Brookfield third with 335.5, Newtown fourth with 331, and Masuk fifth with 232.
Newtown's Alexa Kwarcinski set the team record in the 200 yard individual medley event with a first-place time of 2:09.56; Kwarcinski set NHS pool record in this event earlier this fall.
"She's just an exceptionally hard-working swimmer and has grown so much in her mental toughness and ability to rise to the occasion," Newtown Coach Lisa Irving said.
Kwarcinski also won the 100 breaststroke race in 1:07.70.
Zoe Petertonjes won the 200 freestyle race in 1:58.05 and took second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.09.
"She's very focused, very driven and just knows how to get it done. She works hard and it's paying off," Irving said of Petertonjes.
Newtown's 200 medley relay team of Sierra Marx, Kwarcinski, Maddie Marcisz, and Petertonjes was second in 1:54.70.
The 200 free relay comprising Indigo Land, Kwarcinski, Lilian Accettella, and Petertonjes was first in 1:41.32.
