Doris B. Schoonmaker

Doris B. Schoonmaker, 92, of Sandy Hook, died October 17, in Danbury Hospital. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., June 9, 1920, the daughter of Rose McClanahan.

Her five children, Judith Schoonmaker, Richard Schoonmaker, Susan Wing, Kim Moran, and David Schoonmaker, and her five grandchildren survive Mrs Schoonmaker. Her husband, Walter, predeceased her in 2002.

Mrs Schoonmaker was a member of Church Women United and a longtime member of St John’s Episcopal Church in Sandy Hook.

She graduated from an agricultural college on Long Island in 1942. During World War II she worked as a florist, and as a drill press operator in an aircraft factory for the war effort. She moved to Sandy Hook in 1947 from Long Island. The Schoonmakers were married following the war.

She was an avid gardener. She had a landscape business for 15 years with her husband, and then worked in factory jobs and retail until her retirement.

Her family would like to thank all of the many people who helped Mrs Schoonmaker, including the people of Masonicare in Newtown and the people of Danbury Hospital, for her care. She was loved by many friends.

Cremation took place on October 19. Spreading of the ashes will be private.
