By Nancy K. Crevier
Maureen Marion, public relations and communications representative for the United States Postal Service conveyed to The Newtown Bee on Wednesday, October 31, a statement from the Office of the District Manager of the Postal Service, Connecticut District, concerning the future of the Hawleyville Post Office.
According to the statement, no lease agreement has yet been reached for the Hawleyville Post Office, although the USPS remains committed to continue mail service to the Hawleyville community.
âPostal officials assessing the facility needs for the Hawleyville Post Office have not yet reached a negotiated agreement for a post office in that community. We are reviewing options for a site and anticipate an additional round of solicitation so that no possibility goes unseen,â said District Manager Edward F. Phelan, Jr. âWe are now expediting repairs to existing conditions in our present quarters to best fulfill our commitment to serve the Hawleyville community effectively and to provide our employees with a safe work environment.
âIn accordance with the community notification portion of our facility development process, we will apprise local elected officials and residents on our progress,â he continued. âWe share the enthusiasm of Hawleyvilleâs residents for great postal services provided through an improved postal facility.â
As of Wednesday afternoon, Hawleyville postmaster Mark Favale had not been notified of any renovation plans.
âIt sounds good,â said Mr Favale, âbut we havenât heard anything about it yet.â
The best news the small Route 25 post office has received recently, said the postmaster, was that the popular post office would definitely remain open.
