Scarecrow Contest Winners Named
RoseAnn Reggiano was at Newtown Community Center on Saturday making the final tallies for the Second Annual Newtown Parks & Recreation Scarecrow Contest.
Shortly after noon she announced the winners of the three categories the public had been voting for during the previous week:
Honors for Most Original this year went to The Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard, for their clever creation showing a scarecrow that went over a jump after its horse decided not to;
Newtown Pride was won for the second consecutive year by Bee Publishing Company, whose creation depicted a seated adult reading The Newtown Bee, with two younger scarecrows looking over the adult’s shoulder; and
People’s Choice was won by Girl Scout Troop 50113, whose oversize Cookie Monster was clever and monstrously funny.
Honorary mention went to Church Hill Village’s Headless Horseman, UK Gourmet’s Queen Elizabeth, and the scarecrow joined by a Great Dane and black dog offered by Pleasant Paws.
Reggianno, the Parks & Rec Department’s assistant director of recreation, oversaw the contest again this year. She said Saturday afternoon that she was very pleased, with the entries, donations from local businesses that will be shared as prizes, and especially the public response to the contest.
“It was great to look outside or be out there walking and see all these people walking around and looking at the scarecrows,” she said. “I loved seeing people take pictures of their favorites, and I love all of the creativity.”
