According to Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra, only one graduating class from Sandy Hook School, the Class of 1980, has sought her help finding a time capsule buried on the property.

Class member Wendy Mitchell says the time capsule for the Sandy Hook School graduating class of 1980 was buried either when the class was in fourth or fifth grade. The whereabouts of the capsule are unknown, but Ms Mitchell and class members believe it was buried near the school’s sports field or its courtyard.

Ms Mitchell first contacted Mrs Llodra last Wednesday for help, and the first selectman responded that the town would retrieve the time capsule if a location is specified.

On Tuesday, August 27, Mrs Llodra said anyone from other classes with knowledge of time capsules buried at the school can contact her office and the town will retrieve them.

If the capsules are not retrieved prior to work being done on the Dickinson Drive grounds, Mrs Llodra said the town runs the risk of losing those connections with the past.

“If people have specific knowledge of time capsules buried on the grounds, particularly where, we would like to retrieve them,” the first selectman said.

Mrs Llodra also promised the town will be as careful as possible during site work and construction of the new school building as to not disturb time capsules if found.

“If we could retrieve those kinds of things beforehand it would great,” Mrs Llodra said.

Anyone with knowledge of where a time capsule is buried, Mrs Llodra said they can call 203-270-4201 or 203-270-4202.
