FAQs For Tuesday’s Voting

What is going on in Newtown on April 24?

There will be a Republican Presidential Preference Primary and the annual budget referendum held on April 24.

Can I vote?

Since it is a Republican primary, you must be a registered Republican to vote in the primary. If you are 17 now, but will be 18 by Election Day (November 6, 2012) and are a registered Republican you may vote.

Any registered voter (18 and older) may vote for our budget. In addition, some property owners may also vote. You must be 18, a United States citizen and be on the Grand List dated October 1 with taxable property valued at a minimum of $1,000.

Note: only the individual that is listed on the Grand List will qualify.

Where do I vote?

For the primary, state statutes dictate that all polling places be open: District 1 – Newtown Middle School; District 2 – Reed Intermediate School; District 3-1 – Head Of Meadow School; District 3-2 – Edmond Town Hall (Old Courtroom).

For the budget referendum, all voters will go to the gym at the middle school.

Voting hours will be 6 am to 8 pm.

Do I have to go to two polling places to vote on the 24th?

Republicans wishing to vote in the primary and budget referendum will have to go to the primary polling place and the referendum polling place. State statutes dictate that all polling places be open for a primary and we cannot have a question on the ballot. The middle school will also have both voting locations in the gym. There will be a separation and a separate check in line for each ballot.

What if I am not sure where I vote or if I am registered?

You may leave a voice mail at the registrars’ office 203-270-4250. You may send an e-mail to either registrar, karin.aurelia@newtown-ct.gov or lereine.frampton@newtown-ct.gov.

Will there be anything else going on at the polling places?

School is in session so there will be school activity. Remember that no one will be allowed access to the school through the polling place. If you need to go into the school, you will need to go through the school’s normal sign-in procedures. Please have all students possible ride the bus to eliminate traffic congestion.

PTA volunteers are planning on being outside the referendum with “I Voted” stickers.

Newtown’s Health District will have information on ticks and Lyme disease prevention available to interested citizens. They will have someone there as much as possible that day to answer questions. This is being offered as a public service for anyone interested in the information. The Health District is located in the Newtown Municipal Center.

There may be exit polling at some of the primary locations. We have received a notice of intent but it has not been confirmed as yet.
