Girls
U10
Newtown Heat 2, Fairfield Fillies 1: Alexis Mason and Diana Kirkman each scored a goal for the Heat. Allie Paynter, Priya Deraney, and Audrey Sedensky were tireless on defense in a game in which the Heat was shorthanded. Kaitlyn Reilly, Eleanor Frost, and Catherine Shaw played at the striker position. In her first time in goal, Kira Kelly played well.
Newtown Heat 1, Westport Red 1: Colleen McCarthy held off the Westport team and secured the goal. Alexis Mason scored the only goal for the Heat. Lauren King played a fierce game and the defense was controlled by Catherine Shaw, Allie Paynter, Kira Kelly, and Maria Ringes. Anna Moscovici and Priya Deraney helped the team by playing in multiple positions on the field.
U11
Newtown Thunder 5, Old Greenwich 0: A powerful offense and dominating defense led the Thunder. Makenna Cerney led all scores with three goals, and was assisted by Caitlyn Linden, Madison Pirone, and Nevin Gattey. Caitlyn Linden and Amanda Wikramayanake also scored for the Thunder. The Thunder defense, led by Camryn Cicarelli, Meghan Doyle, and Marissa Thill, provided outstanding protection for goalkeepers Olivia Caplan, Lucy Helgran, and Olivia Hamula, who combined to stop all 12 shots on goal.
Wilton 4, Newtown Rangers 0: Emily Montoya demonstrated strong offensive skills. Allesandra Manfredi outplayed Wilton repeatedly on defense. Stephanie Carr played an outstanding game, both on the field and in the goal. Megan Kelleher made key plays for Newtown at midfield.
U14
Twisters 5, Earthquakes 1: For the Twisters, Kerry Scallon scored twice, and Jenna Hansen, Aofie Flanagan, and Caitlin Filiato scored. Anna Pickney had an assist. Rachael DiCristina was strong at midfield. Chloe Blackman was tough in goal. Emily Jerris scored the Earthquakesâ goal. Jessie Coughlin had a strong game in goal. Solid defensive performances were turned in by Emily Papp, Makenzie Casey, and Cate Haggerty.
Twisters 2, Chatterboxes 2: For the Twisters, goals were scored by Taylor Clomiro and Kerry Scallon. The Twisters had excellent defense by Anita Luxkaranayagam, Bonnie Buchetto and Nicole Mendonca and outstanding goalkeeping by Jenna Hansen. The Chatterboxesâ comeback was fueled by Emily Grimes and Jamie Duncan with a goal each. Natalie Zimmerman and Stephanie Devaney were strong at midfield and the team had brilliant defense from Brianna Baranoski and Morgan Goldstein with goaltending by Margot Elkins.
Boys
U10
Net Rippers 5, Monroe 3: Matt Booch Bucci scored 2, while Monroe put two balls into its own goal. A tough defense led by Kickinâ Connor Barrett and Rockinâ Ryan Brello denied Monroe any goals in the second half. With a minute left to play, Josh Harper ripped in goal, securing the victory. Nick Harperâs corner kicks were key and assists from Josh Harper and Matt Gerbo were vital in the win. Goalies Silas Decker and Adam Bergeron held tough all day.
U11
Trumbull 5, Newtown Spartans 2: With several players sidelined by illness, the Spartans did their best to rally but couldnât pull out the win. After two early Trumbull goals, Matt Guinee capitalized on a penalty kick to bring the Spartans within one. Trumbull answered back with two more goals. The offensive playmaking of Luke Caplan and Zach Van de Weerdt set up Theodore Silverman for a beautiful cross to Thomas Leuci, who punched the ball in for the score. The defensive team of Ben Tuffy, Tiernan Keane, and Jack Lavelle shut down numerous Trumbull scoring opportunities. Felix Summ and Andre Masser played hard both ways to keep Newtown in the game.
U12
Bridgeport 2, Newtown Strikers 1: The Newtown Strikers suffered their first loss in the Southwest District to Bridgeport, the only other unbeaten team in the division. Newtown fell behind 1-0 in the first half, but Cole Rogalin made a great run to even the score in the second half. Robby Schreiber, John Carlson, and Scott Martin all made great offensive efforts, while Liam McNichols and Paul OâLeary anchored the defense for Newtown.
