NHS Band Tag Sale Helps Raise Funds

By Eliza Hallabeck

Graceanne Hanulik, the president of NHS Band Parents Corporation and the organizer for the group’s first tag sale, called the October 24 event held in the NHS cafeteria a success.

“We had a wonderful tag sale,” Ms Hanulik said Tuesday morning. “We raised more than $3,800. It was a wonderful success for our first tag sale.”

The event was held from 9 am until 4 pm on Saturday, and offered everything from furniture and appliances to stuffed animals, books, and baked goods.

Despite the rain on Saturday, the event was a hit, according to Ms Hanulik.

“There was not very much leftover,” she said. Early on during the event tables across the cafeteria were full of donations from 100 band families and neighbors and friends who helped add to the collection.

Money raised during what was called the 100 Family Tag Sale will go toward helping to fund a band and guard trip to Hershey, Penn., instruction fees, supplies, uniforms, and miscellaneous expenses in running the program, according to Ms Hanulik.

The NHS Marching Band & Guard recently moved up in category to the largest band competition size, and now competes against bands much larger in number. Ms Hanulik said throughout the current season the band has performed with the top three bands in the weekly competitions.

While the 100 Family Tag Sale was a first, Ms Hanulik said, “It was a lot of fun.”

Anything left from the tag sale at the end of the day was donated to the Monroe Goodwill, and leftover books were given to the C.H. Booth Library on Main Street, but Ms Hanulik said not much was left at the end of the event.

Saturday night, the NHS Marching Band & Guard went on to participate in the Musical Arts Conference (MAC) Competition at Stamford High School, and placed third with a score of 90.7.

Next weekend the NHS Marching Band & Guard will be traveling to Allentown, Penn., to compete in a regional competition.

Further donations to the NHS Marching Band & Guard can be sent to NHSBPC, PO Box 3333, Newtown CT 06470.
