Bertram Medve

Engineer, Artist, Woodworker & Sports Lover

Bertram “Bert” Medve, 96, of Newtown, died October 24, in Masonicare at Newtown. He was the husband for 64 years of Rita (Hannowell) Medve, who predeceased him in 2001.

Mr Medve was born in Bridgeport, June 29, 1913, a son of Elizabeth (Kovacs) and Kalman Medve. He was educated in Fairfield Schools and attended the Bridgeport Engineering Institute. For the next 25 years, he was employed at the former Underwood Elliot Fisher Corporation of Bridgeport where he was the manufacturing superintendent. Prior to his retirement in 1978, Mr Medve was engineering supervisor at Remington Arms Co. in Arkansas.

He was active in sports during his high school years. He particularly loved track, and held records for the broad jump for more than 25 years after graduation, and he loved baseball. When Mr Medve retired, he took up golf and was an active member of Newtown Country Club.

He was inducted into the Brotherhood of Masons in 1951.

He also was a self-taught artist and woodworker. His love for the outdoors resulted in his building many natural stone retaining walls on his property on Brushy Hill Road. He was very proud of them, and enjoyed showing them to many a passing Mason or neighbor stopping by his house to admire his work.

A daughter, Patricia Bailey of Newtown, and a son, Richard Medve of West Ossippee, N.H.; a brother, eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren survive Mr Medve.

Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

Contributions may be made in his memory to Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Association, PO Box 344, Newtown CT 06470.

The Honan Funeral Home of Newtown is assisting the family.
