The third-seeded Newtown High School field hockey team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to second-seeded and host Immaculate of Danbury in the South-West Conference Tournament semifinals, on October 29.

Immaculate, which had been upset by Newtown in a 2-1 overtime thriller during the regular slate, turned the tables on the Nighthawks with a 2-1 victory of its own, eliminating the Nighthawks.

Kat Trammel scored midway through the first half for a 1-0 Newtown lead. The Mustangs answered less than a minute later and the score remained even until the Mustangs capitalized on a penalty stroke with 7:51 remaining in the second half.

The Nighthawks created a few late-game chances. A goal was waved off because of a violation near the goal, and Immaculate held on.

Newtown generated six penalty corners, had nine shots on goal, and out-chanced the Mustangs. Newtown goaltender Rebecca Filiato made five stops.

"We played well as a team but didn't finish when we needed to — tough loss," Newtown Coach Stephanie Kearns said.

The Nighthawks will look to rebound in the upcoming state tournament.
