Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team blanked Pomperaug of Southbury 2-0 in the South-West Conference Tournament semifinals on October 28, earning a spot in the October 30 championship game; and the Newtown girls’ volleyball squad topped Brookfield 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-21) in the SWC quarterfinals, also on October 28, to clinch a spot in the October 30 semifinal round.

The soccer team, seeded second in the tourney, will take on No. 5 Brookfield at Stratford’s Bunnell High School; the title game will begin at 7 pm. Newtown’s volleyball team, also a No. 2 seed, will play No. 3 Bunnell of Stratford in the semifinals at Newtown High at 5 pm.

The booters got into the pinnacle game thanks to second-half goals by Charlie Poarch and Clay Gattey. Poarch’s net-finder was assisted by Brenton Scott. Pomperaug was the No. 3 seed and wound up hosting the semifinal contest because the Southbury school was selected as the neutral site for that round of the tournament. Brookfield advanced to the big game with a 2-1 (3-1 in penalty kicks) win over top-seeded Joel Barlow of Redding. Newtown defeated Brookfield 4-0 during the regular season.

Newtown’s spikers were at home for their quarterfinal round clash with Brookfield and overcame a game one loss to the No. 7 Bobcats. Mackenzie Lapp had six aces and three kills, Kyle Dandrea compiled 12 kills and 16 digs, Kayla O’Grady had eight kills to go along with four aces, and Meghan Logan had 30 assists and 13 digs. The Nighthawks defeated Bunnell 3-1 during the regular campaign. The winner will take on either top-seeded Barlow or No. 4 Bethel on the November 2 championship match, slated for 7 pm at Weston High School.

Mackenzie Lapp goes up at the net for a kill during Newtown's SWC Tournament quarterfinal round win over visiting Brookfield on October 28.
