Raptors' Visit Makes Students' Spirits Soar
Raptorsâ Visit Makes Studentsâ Spirits Soar
By Larissa Lytwyn
Master Falconer Jonathan Wood, founder of the Raptor Project, Incorporated, a traveling collection of birds of prey, set studentsâ spirits flying during his recent visit to Newtown Middle School.
Mr Wood recently visited Sandy Hook and Head Oâ Meadow elementary schools; in May he is scheduled to visit Hawley.
âI really loved the way the birds were allowed to fly; it was so exciting!â declared seventh grader Jessica Edwards. âI really liked the owls.â
Mr Woodâs collection included Hedwig, one of many snowy owls used in the Harry Potter films â much to Jessicaâs delight.
Like many of her peers, Jessica describes herself as a âhugeâ fan of the J.K. Rowling series.
Also featured were barred, short-eared, spectacled, screech, eagle, and great horned owls.
In addition, staff and students gaped at the majestic beauty of Uncle Sam, a bald eagle, and Cody, a golden eagle.
A kestrel and Marlin falcon, commonly known as a âlady falcon,â were also present.
âThe Marlin falcon was especially popular in medieval times,â noted Mr Wood. âThe ladies [of the court] would keep them.â
Teachers and students marveled at how disciplined the birds were when they flew, making a round, even sweep around the auditorium before landing back on Mr Woodâs gloved hand.
While showing off the birdsâ flying skills, Mr Wood also taught students a number of facts about their habitat, feeding patterns, and the effect of DDT and other pesticides on their environment.
âThe presentation was simply wonderful,â said Ms Sherlock, who had the opportunity to touch Tiger the eagle owl after the show. â[Mr Wood] is amazing.â
The schoolâs Cultural Arts committee sponsored Mr Woodâs performance.
