National Merit Scholarship Program Recognizes Commended Students

Newtown High School Principal Bill Manfredonia recently announced that Michael Corbeil, Sara Davis, Rebecca Gellis, Daniel Gindraux, Nicholas Isles, Ryan Kraft, and Al Mancuso have been named a commended student in the 2005 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Brian Hunt was recognized as a semifinalist.

Mr Manfredonia will present an official Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSC) to these scholastically talented seniors.

The Newtown High School seniors are among approximately 34,000 commended students nationwide.

Although Brian is the only student who will move forward in the program, commended students are placed among the top five percent of more than one million students who entered the 2005 competition by taking the 2003 Preliminary Sat/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

“The young men and women named Commended Students in the 2005 National Merit Program have exhibited an outstanding academic performance, for which they have been honored,” said a National Merit Scholarship Corporation spokesperson. “We hope that the recognition received by these scholastically talented students will encourage them to take advantage of opportunities for the continued pursuit of excellence. The nation will benefit from the full development of this valuable intellectual resource.”
