To the Editor:

As a candidate for Legislative Council District 2, of course I want your vote. More importantly, I want you to exercise your right to vote. I am running alongside Democratic candidates who have proven their commitment through volunteerism, civic duty, and activism. Your neighbors, these candidates, have met voters, shared their ideals, and learned what you feel are the most important issues facing Newtown.

I have seen first-hand their leadership and ability to answer the tough questions, both online and in person. These candidates don’t shy away from difficult issues, instead they tackle them head-on. They advocate for public health and safety, education, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. They have great ideas for strategic growth that can lessen our tax burden while retaining the charm of Newtown.

The issues that divide the nation are not any different here in Newtown. What I have seen are passionate candidates, unafraid to call out instances of racism, who will advocate for keeping Newtown physically and psychologically safe, and step up to make decisions impacting education in Newtown in, at times, a hostile landscape. Divisiveness is a symptom of a larger problem and we should actively work to ensure we are not so divided that we are unwilling to listen to our neighbors.

Engaging in thoughtful conversations to gain a perspective from all angles will only help us grow as a community. These next few days are critical. Please take a moment to learn about the candidates, ask us the difficult questions, and ensure we represent your voice. Most importantly, candidates want to represent all of Newtown and we can only represent you if you vote November 2.
