Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For information about programs offered, call 203-270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is $1 each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip. Call 203-748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

This Week’s Programs

*Once again our Harvest Bazaar was a great success. A special thanks to all who donated items, made items, baked goodies, and of course to all that purchased items. Many thanks to everyone who helped out prior to and during the bazaar.

*Halloween Bash and Bingo is Thursday, October 27, at 1 pm. Costumes A Must! Join in and enjoy some ghoulish treats.

*Holiday crafting will begin on Thursdays in November at 1:30 pm.

*Line dancing has been canceled through November 15, and will resume on November 22 at 10:30 am.

*Cruising the islands: Honolulu, Oahu; Hilo, Hawaii; Kona, Hawaii; and Nawiliwili, Kauai, on the Pride of America, November 3–13. Details are available at the center.

Upcoming Programs

The center will be closed for Veterans Day on November 11 and on November 24 and 25 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Day Trips

*Mohegan Sun Casino bus trip on Thursday, November 10, includes $15 food coupon and three $5 free bets. Depart at 8 am; cost is $30.

*Visit the 9/11 Memorial in New York City on November 15. A family-style luncheon at the famous Italian restaurant Carmine’s is followed by a tour of the memorial. Depart at 8:45 am; cost is $74; waiting list only.

*Thanksgiving Celebration at the Inn at Villa Blanca on Monday, November 21, includes family-style luncheon, live music for your listening entertainment, a complimentary drink ticket and a gift upon arrival. Bus departs at 10:30 am, but you are welcome to carpool. Cost is $29.95.

Monday: 10:30 am, exercise; noon, lunch: 1 pm, chorus/sing-along and yoga; 1:30 pm: art class.

Tuesday: 10 am, Cards for Troops; noon, lunch; 2 pm, tai chi; 3 pm, chair yoga.

Wednesday: 10:30 am, exercise; noon, lunch; 2:15 pm: Bridges.

Thursday: noon, lunch; 1 pm, Scrabble and yoga; 1:30 pm, crafts.

Friday: 9 am, Mah Jongg; 10:30 am, quilting; 10:30 am, exercise; noon: knit or crochet; 2 pm, Zumba Gold; 3 pm, chair yoga.

Other items available at any time are: Wii (bowling, tennis, baseball, golf), pool table, ping pong table, card table and various board games.

 

Menu For Week Of

October 31–November 4

Monday: Spooky spaghetti with monster meatballs, ghoulish green beans, witches brew, batty breadsticks, candy corn brownies.

Tuesday: Stuffed salmon with dill sauce, brown rice, green beans, oat bread, fresh fruit.

Wednesday: Turkey sandwich on club roll with lettuce and tomato, carrot sticks, cranberry juice, chocolate chip cookie.

Thursday: Chicken with Florentine sauce, bowtie noodles, peas and onions, wheat bread, mandarin oranges.

And for planning ahead—

Monday, November 7: Swiss steak with peppers and tomato, smashed potato, fresh acorn squash, rye bread, fresh fruit.

Tuesday, November 8: Cheese lasagna, meatballs in marinara sauce, spinach salad with tomato and French dressing, Italian bread, coffee cake.
