Lt Col Israel Nezvesky

 Lieutenant Colonel Israel “Ike” Nezvesky, US Army (Retired), 81, died October 20, in Columbia, S.C. He was born January 17, 1930, in Bridgeport.

He was a longtime resident in Newtown, where he was very active in the Jewish Community. The Adath Israel Synagogue has an educational wing named in his honor.

He attended the University of Connecticut and graduated from the University of Nebraska. He had a long and decorated military career in the US Army, receiving many medals and awards. He proudly served his country through two tours of duty in Vietnam as well as service in Germany, Okinawa, Korea, and the United States. He was Ranger-qualified and served with the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. After retiring, he was employed by South Carolina DHEC.

Mr Nezvesky was energetic, active, and ready at a moment’s notice to live life. He had many interests, including obtaining his master gardening degree at age 79, bowling, poker with friends, USC sports, and was an avid reader.

 He loved spending time with his grandchildren and going to their athletic and music events. He volunteered at the Northeast Farmer’s Market, the VA Hospital, and with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

He was a longtime member of Beth Shalom Synagogue in Columbia, S.C.

Mr Nezvesky was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle who was adored by his family and admired by his friends. “Papa” will be greatly missed by his family.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Claire G. Nezvesky, of the home; daughters, Jill N. Carr, and husband David, and Debra N. Stombler, and husband Jon; four grandchildren; sisters, Sylvia Kirshblum, and husband Henry, and Shirley Beresin; and many loving nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Samuel and Lewis Nezvesky and one sister, Minnie Lichter, predeceased Mr Nezvesky.

A graveside service for Mr Nezvesky took place October 23, in Beth Shalom, Arcadia Lakes Cemetery, in South Carolina. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, assisted the family.
