Beloved “YiaYia” [/naviga:h2]

Helen “YiaYia” Gulalo, 88, of Newtown, died peacefully, October 20, at Masonicare at Newtown. She was born in Manhattan, October 20, 1923.

She was known for her fun-loving personality and oversized heart. She was a family role model of selflessness, love, kindness, and giving. She was proud, independent, and taught her family to always work hard and save for a rainy day. Her grandchildren will always remember her for her spinach pie, fish cakes, frozen Milky Way bars, and honey cake.

She lives on in all the hearts and minds of all her children and grandchildren.

Two children, Jim Gulalo, and his wife Lillian, of Newtown, and George Gulalo, and his wife Dianne, of Los Angeles; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Mengerditus of Newtown; and many nieces and nephews survive Mrs Gulalo. She was predeceased by three sisters, Betsy, Virginia, and Minnie, who have been waiting patiently for their fourth “May I” partner. A part of her soul was given to her great-granddaughter Olivia, and can be seen in Olivia’s smiles and laughs.

The Trisagion Prayer Service was conducted in the Honan Funeral Home, Newtown, October 22. The Rite of Burial took place October 24, at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, Danbury. Interment was in Newtown Village Cemetery.
