Field Hockey Team To Face Barlow In Rematch

Newtown High School’s field hockey team, coming off a win and two losses since a busy stretch of games began on Saturday, was slated to conclude the regular season against non-conference foe Ridgefield on Wednesday night (after The Bee sports section went to press). The Nighthawks stood at 6-5-1-2, having beaten Pomperaug of Southbury 2-1 on Saturday, suffered their second overtime defeat to New Milford in a 2-1 battle on Monday, and lost 3-0 at Joel Barlow in Redding on Tuesday.

In the win over Pomperaug, Newtown avenged a 1-0 defeat in week one behind goals by Jess Haitz and Kayla O’Leary. With the Hawks trailing New Milford in the waning minutes, Nicole DeFelice deadlocked the game to force OT before NHS finally fell.

Newtown is scheduled to begin South-West Conference tournament play on Friday, October 28 when the Nighthawks head back to Barlow for a rematch with the Falcons. Newtown earned the tourney’s No. 7 seed and Barlow is seeded second.
