MIDDLEBURY â Composite photographs of Tibet by Michael Gallagher are on exhibit until January 3 at Westover Schoolâs Joachim Schumacher Gallery.
The Tibetan prints were composed from photographs taken by Mr Gallagher during a six-month sabbatical that took him to Tibet, China, Cambodia and Thailand. The large-scale composite photographs are multiple perspective images which examine the sacred and daily life during Saga Dawa, the holiest of Tibetan Buddhist celebrations. The works are printed with permanent ink on watercolor paper.
Mr. Gallagher has taught photography for 23 years at Westover School, instructing such courses as basic photography, color photography, documentary photography, large-format photography, experimental photography, digital video, digital artistsâ books and the zone system.
He has had solo exhibitions of his photographs at Maine Photography Workshops, Gannet Gallery at Rochester Institute of Photography, The Mattatuck Museum, Westover School, Taft School, The Gunnery, The Hotchkiss School, and Deerfield Academy. His work as been exhibited in group shows in galleries including Real Art Ways in Hartford, The Connecticut Commission on the Art Gallery in Hartford, Westport Art Center, John Slade Ely House in New Haven, and other locations.
He was awarded first prize in the 1992 Connecticut Vision show at The Mattatuck Museum and Curatorâs Choice at the 1993 Connecticut Invitational Show at John Slade Ely House.
The exhibit may be viewed daily from 12:30 to 5 pm when school is in session. The gallery is located in Westoverâs Performing Arts Center which is accessible from the schoolâs main entrance opposite Middlebury Green.
