Diabetes Symposium At St Vincent’s

BRIDGEPORT — St Vincent’s Medical Center and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) are co-sponsoring a free Diabetes Symposium for the second year. The event is set for Thursday, November 10, from 7:45 to 11:45 am, at the William H. Pitt Health & Recreation Center at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield.

The symposium is open to both professionals and the general public and will focus on skin, foot, and eye care, nutrition, common diabetic concerns, and legal issues.

The symposium will include programs for both professionals and patients and will provide an update on the diagnosis and management of diabetes. The patient program will feature St Vincent’s podiatrist Carmen Luciano, DPM, on “Diabetic Footcare”; St Vincent’s endocrinologist Linda Werner, MD, on “Diabetes Overview — The Whole Picture”; Greenwich Hospital Certified Diabetes Educator and Registered Dietitian Nancy Ryan, RD, CDE, on “Nutrition & Diabetes.”

The professional program will feature St Vincent’s dermatologist Kenneth Maicco, MD, on “Diabetic Dermopathy,” focusing on identification of skin lesions and dermatologic effects of the disease; retinal disease specialist Philip Falcone, MD, also assistant clinical professor at Yale University School of Medicine on “Diabetic Retinopathy” (eye symptoms and their treatment); and attorney-at-law Robert Cooney, Esq, of Williams, Cooney, & Sheehy, LLC, on “Diabetes and the Law” (legal issues surrounding diabetes).

St Vincent’s President Susan Davis, RN, EdD, and symposium program director Joseph Rosa, MD, will give a welcome address, and at the conclusion, an award for service will be presented to a St Vincent’s physician. Coordinators of the event are Michael Herman, MD, chairperson of the Department of Medicine at St. Vincent’s, and Diane Creed, marketing director for the ADA.

A question and answer session will be offered at both programs. Breakfast will also be provided.

Nurses will receive three continuing education credits for attending while the symposium will provide three credit hours in Category 1 toward the AMA Physician Recognition Award.
