ACS Is Making Strides

To the Editor

On behalf of the American Cancer Society, we thank the more than 5,500 people from Fairfield and Litchfield who joined together on Sunday, October 16, to fight breast cancer in the American Cancer Society’s 12th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The five-mile walk at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport is part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Making Strides walkers raised an extraordinary $460,000! Dollars raised from Making Strides are used by the society to fuel the most promising research, to spread lifesaving breast cancer awareness messages, to advocate for screening opportunities for all people, to ease the cancer burden for people facing the disease, and support programs for breast cancer patients and their families in Connecticut.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer gave everyone — young, old, men, women and children — an opportunity to raise money and create awareness to fight the disease. Individuals, families, and groups walked, all rallying around family members, friends, and co-workers who have been diagnosed with the disease breast cancer. Walkers also supported and signed the “wall of hope” banner, which will be making its way to Washington, D.C., in an effort to rally interest in our fight for more funding for the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.

We would like to thank Making Strides’ flagship sponsors, Gillette, Lorad, and Purdue Pharma. Each recruited hundreds of staff members and volunteers from their organizations. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the individuals and teams from area schools, businesses, church group, and hospitals that were united in our hope and vision. As a volunteer-led organization, we couldn’t have done this without each and every one of you! Special thanks to our media sponsors News 12 and Star 99.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among American women. It will strike 211,240 this year, including 2,720 in Connecticut alone. For more information about Breast Cancer Awareness Month, breast cancer and other cancers, call your American Cancer Society at 800-ACS-2345.

Again, our thanks to everyone who illustrated that Hope Starts Here!

Sincerely,

Katie Kendrick and Michelle Wolf
