Programs For Parents

POSITIVE PARENTING PROGRAMS – We are now taking names for the next sessions, both morning and evening. Also, if you would like to host a 5-week group in your home, a staff member would be happy to arrange this with you. This is a great way for neighbors to get to know one another. Any questions, please call Roseanne Loring at 270-4335.

“ADOLESCENTS: HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN THEY’VE CROSSED THE LINE?” with John Gelinas, MD, on Wednesday, November 3, at 7:30 pm. Free. This will be an open discussion of normal adolescent development and behavior and how to understand, and appreciate, if your child has ventured outside of the norm.

Community Programs

A HALLOWEEN FAIR on Saturday, October 30 from 1 to 4 pm sponsored by the high school Youth Advisory Board. They are asking a donation admission and fees for games. The money raised will support their annual scholarship.

The YAB is also sponsoring a TAG SALE on November 13, in the Memorial Room of the Congregational Church House at 41-A Main Street. Anyone wishing to make donations can call NYS at 270-4335. Donations may be dropped off on Friday, Nov 12 between 2:30 and 6:30 pm or after 8 am on Saturday. (Only items ready for sale, please) All proceeds will be used for the YAB annual scholarship fund.

NEWTOWN FRIENDS OF MUSIC – Sunday, October 31 at 3 pm, Edmond Town Hall. Student vouchers available at the Youth Services office.

Super Sitter Babysitting Program

Due to conflicts with Middle School early dismissals, the November Accelerated Super Sitter course will be postponed until Tuesday, December 7; Thursday, December 9; Tuesday, December 14; and Thursday, December 16. The class runs from 4 to 5:30 pm and cost is $25. Super Sitters meets at Newtown Youth Services.

Youth Group Meetings

The High School Youth Advisory Board (YAB) will meet on Monday, November 8, at 6:30 pm at Youth Services. The TAG SALE will be the focus of the meeting. Anyone interested in joining, please call the office or see Erin Lewis or Jessica Tendler at NHS.

NYCAAP meets every week alternating Mondays and Tuesdays at 5:30 pm. The next meeting is Monday, November 8 at NYS. Call the office or see Jessica Clark or Katie Hayes for details.

The Middle School Youth Advisory Board will meet on various dates in November. (The group will be working on a special holiday project). Please check this column or the YAB bulletin boards in the MS café or St. Rose for further dates. New members are always welcome.

Attention Teens

The Newtown Youth Services’ Job Bank matches Newtown residents with teens who are in search of part-time employment such as babysitting, yard work, or various odd jobs. Some positions are part-time, and others are on-going.

If you are between 13 and 18 and are interested in joining the Job Bank, please call the Job Bank Coordinator Jessica Clark, at 270-4335. Applications may be picked up at the office between 8:30 and 4:30 or call the office and we’ll mail you one.

Entertainment Books

Once again, NYS makes these handy books available at $30 each. They make great gifts and include discounts for area restaurants, videos, movie tickets, dry cleaning, etc. It’s a great way to support Newtown Youth Services. Please call 270-4335 to reserve your copy.

All programs will take place at Newtown Youth Services, 41-A Main Street (next to Town Hall), unless noted. For further information on any of the above programs, please call Newtown Youth Services at 270-4335.
