Newtown Is Well Represented Once Again

In Youth Orchestra

BRIDGEPORT — Geoff DiBeneditto of Sandy Hook was recently selected as principal clarinet and Michael Rostafin of Newtown as principal trumpet for the Principal Orchestra of the Greater Bridgeport Symphony Youth Orchestras (GBSYO). Both will perform on Sunday, November 7, when the GBSYO presents “An Afternoon with Viennese Composers,” the first concert of the 1999-2000 season.

The capital city of Austria has been a cultural center for centuries. The Austrian emperors and lesser nobility were strong patrons of the arts, particularly of music. The years from 1770 to 1820 are generally considered the apex of the Viennese School of composers, which included Haydn, Mozart and Schubert.

The String, Concert and Symphony Orchestras have each programmed one composition of a Viennese master. The Principal Orchestra will play music exclusively of composers from Vienna.

Over 240 young musicians from 24 communities in Fairfield and New Haven Counties were selected by competitive auditions in early September. Other students from Newtown and Sandy Hook are Christopher Benson, Drew Carleton, James Dellasala, Gordon Johnson, Nicole Kaza, Emily Koh, Kari Levinson, Alison Lones, Kaitlin McDow, John Pantan, Kristen Provost, Heather Snow, Ben Snyder and Christopher Thibdeau.

The season-opening concert will begin at 3 pm. It will be performed at Klein Memorial Auditorium, at 910 Fairfield Avenue.

Tickets are available at the door at $9 for adults, $7 for students and senior citizens. For further information, call Barb Upton at 203/452-0003.
