To the Editor,
To the Editor,
Shortly, we will have the opportunity to exercise our freedom of choice in the election booth, where we will choose our town leaders. Among our choices are several candidates for the Board of Education. I take great pleasure in recommending Julie Luby for a position on that board.
I have been very fortunate to work with Mrs Luby at Regional School District 15 for the past three years and know her to be a thoughtful, intelligent, and skilled educational leader. She brings much experience and expertise to her position as chair of the English department at the high school in that district (Pomperaug High School). Among her many skills is her open approach to the ideas and capabilities of her department members, a skill which suggests that she is one who can not only hear the voice of the people, but who can take it into account when setting policies. She is both a decisive leader and a great listener.
Mrs Luby is also a parent with two children already in our school system and a third who will be entering it in a few years. I have always thought that our board members should have experience as parents within the school system. One of the concerns this community has had in past years has been the feeling of disconnection between the schools and the community. Having a parent like Mrs Luby on the board can go far towards healing those feelings.
I intend to vote for Julie Luby for the Board of Education, and I hope that enough of my fellow voters do the same that she may serve the school community.
Sincerely,
Paul E. Doniger
