Offers Info For 200 Destinations

 HARTFORD — More than 200 agricultural destinations, including a bison farm, are included on the Connecticut Farm Map, newly updated and reissued by the state Department of Agriculture.

“I urge visitors and residents alike to stop at one of the many farms that dot our state’s beautiful landscape,” Governor M. Jodi Rell said upon the release of the new map on October 11. “Connecticut’s farms add so much to the quality of life we enjoy in the Nutmeg State.

“This map and website can help you find where you can pick apples fresh from the tree, see maple sap being transformed into syrup, and even watch the buffalo roam. Old stone walls, green pastures, and rolling hills are all part of our farms’ scenic beauty. We want people to experience them firsthand,” the governor continued.

Complimenting the popular printed map is a brand-new, interactive website. To access the new site, go to CTGrown.gov and click on CT Farm Map under Featured Links at the right of the page.

One can search the website’s database by type of product, county, or name to access farms’ contact information, addresses, and descriptions. Users can get directions, satellite views, and links to the farms’ websites.

Agriculture Commissioner F. Philip Prelli pointed out that “this map also contains information on Connecticut agricultural statistics, farmers’ markets, cooperative extension offices, and Department of Agriculture contacts. The map is both entertaining and educational, while it showcases the diversity of our state’s agriculture and its value as a destination attraction.”

The Department of Agriculture produced the Connecticut Farm Map and new website with input from the Connecticut Department of Transportation, the University of Connecticut’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and the USDA Rural Business Service.

The printed maps, which double as handy, full-sized, Connecticut road maps, are available at public libraries, town halls, state welcome centers, and many other agricultural sites throughout the state. To receive bulk quantities, contact the Department of Agriculture at 860-713-2503.
