Inmates Arrested Following Assaults At Garner Prison

State police report two violent incidents resulting in inmate arrests this week at Garner Correctional Institution, the state’s high-security prison on Nunnawauk Road.

In an incident that occurred about 3 pm October 23, state police responded to Garner after an inmate there assaulted three correction officers, state police said. Each of the correction officers received minor injuries, according to state police.

State police lodged three counts of assault on a correction officer against inmate Tremell Collins-Smith, 25. Collins-Smith was scheduled to be arraigned on the charges on October 24 in Danbury Superior Court.

Collins-Smith is serving a five-year sentence in Garner on a drug sales conviction.

Also, state police responded to the prison about 10 am October 22, after inmate Shaka Sykes, 37, threw a cup of hot coffee into the face of a correction officer, injuring the officer, state police said.

State police arrested Sykes on a charge of assault on a correction officer. Sykes was scheduled for court arraignment on October 23.

Sykes is serving a 26-year prison term for a conviction on second-degree robbery.
