United Nations Week In Newtown

The flag of the United Nations flew above Edmond Town Hall all this week in commemoration of United Nations Week in Newtown. The UN was founded in 1945 and the anniversary of its founding is held each year on October 24.

Last week, First Selectman Herb Rosenthal issued a proclamation to members of local Girl Scouts Troop 477 proclaiming the week of October 24 “United Nations Week.” Troop 477 has been appointed chair of UN Week in Newtown to show the importance of identifying human rights violations. Town Clerk Cindy Curtis Simon was also on hand as building maintenance technician, Mike Snyder, raised the flag last Friday afternoon.

Joining in the event were Norma Gray and Julia Allen of the Newtown Woman’s Club. Mrs Gray is GFWC International co-president and Mrs Allen is International Affairs chairperson for the Newtown club. This group just returned from a trip to the United Nations in New York City. The International GFWC is listed at the United Nations as an original founder.

Among the priorities of the United Nations is the advancement of human rights, including the rights of children, women, displaced persons, and indigenous peoples. The United States was one of the founding members of the UN and continues to be a leader in supporting Democratic values, including the rights of all citizens, the proclamation stated.

“If the United Nations is to continue its important work of advancing human rights, protecting the environment, preventing and resolving conflict, and promoting humane and democratic values, it must have the support from both the United States government and American citizens,” the proclamation added.
