The election next week has generated precious little excitement, but there are still important choices to be made. I’d like to say a word for Melissa Pilchard, who has been a member of the Legislative Council for the first district about as long as there has been a Legislative Council. We could do a lot worse than give her the job for life.

Melissa has two qualities that seem to me to be rare in politicians, perhaps in people in general. She always does her homework, and she’s incorrigibly honest. Melissa researches every question that might come before the council. Ask her about the issues involving the Fairfield Hills property and she’ll give you every option and the ramifications of every option. She knows what goes on in Newtown, and how it works, better than anyone.

And she’ll tell it to you straight. She is always candid about what she thinks and why, even if it’s an unpopular position. If you’re going to argue with her you’d better have your facts right and you’d better be as unselfish in your devotion to the town as she is. That kind of commitment should be rewarded.

Please vote for Melissa Pilchard for Legislative Council for the first district.
