Iconographer To Speak Nov 12

Father Andrew Tregubov, iconographer and lecturer, will speak on Friday, November 12, at Sts. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church in Bethel. His lecture, entitled “The Face of Christ,” concerns the mystery of the icons of the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Iconography is the authentic form of Christian art that encompasses 2,000 years of Christian history and is present in all ancient Christian cultures.

Father Andrew and his wife, Galina, who are both artists, emigrated to the United States from Russia in 1975. Fr Andrew studied at St Vladimir’s Theological Seminary in Crestwood, New York and gathered knowledge about different techniques and styles of iconography from a number of well-known iconographers, especially Leonid Ouspensky, Maria Struve, and Elizabeth Osolin, all from Paris, France.

In 1977 Fr Andrew and his wife moved to Vermont to live near Alexander Solzhenitsyn, author and Nobel Prize winner. Fr Andrew, who had experience in printing, assisted Solzhenitsyn in publishing his books in the Russian language.

Fr Andrew was ordained a priest and assigned to a parish in Claremont, N.H. in 1979. Since then, in addition to being a parish priest and iconographer, he has written and illustrated books, lectured extensively around the US, and taught classes at St Vladimir’s Seminary.

This is the third consecutive year that he has been invited to speak at Sts. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church. The church is located on Route 302 in Bethel, just west of Old Hawleyville Road. Refreshments will follow the lecture. The church bookstore, Wisdom Books and Icons, will offer mounted icon prints from all over the world for sale as well as works of Fr Tregubov. For more information call 791-9994. A $5 donation will be requested at the door.
