Sandy Hook Firefighter Tess Vogel sprays foam on the front passenger side of a car after two fire companies responded to the easternmost section of Church Hill Road on October 12 for a reported car fire. Sandy Hook Fire & Rescue and Newtown Hook & Ladder Company were dispatched to Sandy Hook Center at 9:54 Friday morning after a Connecticut State Trooper called in the possible fire. Firefighters were able to quickly douse the fire, which had started in the engine compartment of a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. The male driver of the vehicle was able to self-extricate without injury. The roadway was closed for a short time to all traffic while firefighters put out the fire; the road was eventually opened to eastbound traffic during the final clean-up of the scene. Connecticut DEEP was notified of the call after a small amount of fluids ran into a nearby storm drain. (Bee Photo, Hicks)
