Town Players of Newtown is closing out their 2013 season with Veronica’s Room by the renowned playwright Ira Levin. The chilling mystery thriller will open Friday, November 8, at The Little Theatre, 18 Orchard Hill Road.

Written by the author of Deathtrap and Rosemary’s Baby, Veronica’s Room explores the thin line between fantasy and reality, madness and murder. College student Susan (played by Nicole Morin of Danbury) and her date Larry (Stephen Saxton, Ridgefield) find themselves invited to the Brabissant mansion outside of Boston by its elderly caretakers, John Mackey (Christopher Bird, Newtown) and his wife Maureen (Elizabeth Young, Newtown).

The Mackeys have asked Susan to impersonate the long-dead Veronica Brabissant in order to solace the family’s only remaining member, Cecilia. She is dying of cancer and, believing Veronica is still alive, wants to make up a decades-old quarrel before it’s too late.

Once Susan is dressed in Veronica’s clothes, the role-playing begins in earnest. However, things aren’t always as they seem, and the plot twists in Veronica’s Room will delight – and shock – the audience. The Los Angeles Times said playwright Levin “coolly unravels a nightmare of deception so corrupt that each layer peeled away reveals a new and surprising abomination … play[ing] a crafty game of psychology, pitting conventional reality and morality against an insidious force of mind-bending guile and rampant depravity.”

Veronica’s Room is being directed by Pam Meister Jones of Newtown and produced by Stephen Hoose of New Milford. The production crew includes lighting designer Nick Kaye and set designer/builder Timothy Huebenthal of Southbury.

The production will run November 8-30, with curtain at 8 pm Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 pm matinees on Sundays, November 17 and 24.

Tickets are $20 for the evening shows, $15 for matinees.

Parents should note that due to the mature content of this production, it is not considered suitable for children.
