Newtown PD, Easterseals To Host Traffic Stop Practice For Neurodiverse Community
The Easterseals Driver Assessment Program provides a clinical and behind the wheel assessment of the skills required for driving. The program can help to determine if someone should continue to drive, if adaptive equipment is needed to continue to drive, or if someone is ready to learn how to drive.
Newtown Police Department will work with representatives of the driver assessment program to conduct practice traffic stops on Sunday, November 12. Appointments will be available between 10 am and 2 pm at the local police department, 191 Main Street South.
Participants will have the opportunity to review and practice the process of a routine traffic stop with local police. They will also learn how to use the DMV Blue Envelope.
The Blue Envelope was created to enhance communication between a police officer and a driver with autism spectrum disorder. The purpose of the envelope is to have the driver place their insurance card, registration and driver license in it, so they can hand it to an officer during a traffic stop.
Additional vendors will also be present on November 12, to discuss available services and resources for the neurodiverse community.
What a great program. Hopefully it will reduce the stress on these drivers if/when they get pulled over, and will increase their safety.
Agreed, what a great program. I have often said that a program like this should be part of every teen driving class. Hopefully they expand this past the neurodiverse community.
