Letters of Endorsement
To the Editor:
I’m writing this letter of endorsement for Legislative Council candidate Paul Lundquist.
I can think of no one better for the position than Paul. He’s level headed, organized and a man of ut-most integrity.
He really cares about Newtown and the people who live here.
His knowledge-based, fiscally conservative approach works for me and you too.
Support Paul Lundquist for Legislative Council.

To the Editor:
Paul Lundquist has offered a steadfast, intelligent and cooperative voice on our town's Legislative Council. His willingness to listen to and work with other members of our town government represent his core personal beliefs that contention and obstruction do not solve any issues facing Newtown and Sandy Hook.
A creative thinker and problem-solver, Paul is one of our rare public servants who does meticulous and deep research into the questions that face the council and makes informed and well-supported decisions. His dedication to bring businesses to our town and his support of the unassigned fund balance policy are examples of his balance and reason, and how necessary his voice is on our Legislative Council.
I will support Paul Lundquist for Legislative Council and our entire town would be wise to do the same.
Thank you,
David Wheeler

To the Editor:
I enthusiastically support and endorse Mary Ann Jacob in the upcoming November 3rd election for the position of Legislative Council, District 2.
I have known Mary Ann for many years and have had the privilege of working with her when I was on the Legislative Council. Her hard work, dedication and attention to detail have provided the members of her district with outstanding leadership.
Mary Ann comes to us with a proven track record of accomplishments, skills and knowledge which is why she should continue to serve Newtown as the Chairman of the Legislative Council. Her strong leadership has met the challenging demands of the Newtown, and has earned her the respect of both parties.
Please join me in supporting Mary Ann Jacob for Legislative Council this coming Election Day.

To the Editor:
I’d like to take this moment o recommend reelecting Paul Lundquist for Newtown’s Legislative Council, District 1.
I’ve known Paul for almost 15 years and I feel his involvement in the town government has helped to provide a stoic balance around issues that foster division. He brings a calm sensibility to discussions and has a deep passion for working through complex issues to get to the right answers.
While being wonderfully analytic, Paul is not someone who is lost in the impersonal nature of numbers – he is a “people person” that cares and gives freely of his time. A wonderful dad, husband, neighbor and friend, I wholeheartedly embrace his reelection.
I would also like to express my solid support of Chris Smith for Newtown Legislative Council, District 3. I have known Chris for many years and I believe his kindness, thoughtfulness, and caring personality will make him a welcome and successful representative of our district. In addition to Chris’s empathetic personality, he also has strong business acumen gained from decades of navigating the corporate world. He understands the need of “designing with an end in mind,” crafting an appropriate plan and seeing that through – threading ambiguity and uncertainty with clarity of purpose.
Chris is also a wonderful dad, husband and utterly reliable neighbor and friend. All of these characteristics, coupled with his inclusiveness and collaborative nature make him a natural for this role. Please join me in voting for Chris.

To the Editor:
I have always felt that in local politics, party affiliation doesn’t matter as much as does on a state or national level. The issues that divide us, or more importantly unite us, are issues that touch us at a different level. I am writing in support of two different candidates for Legislative Council in District 2. Both are incumbents, one is a Republican, Mary Ann Jacob and the other is a Democrat, Dan Honan.
Mary Ann and I met years ago when we were supporting various education issues together. Support-ing a budget, or advocating for capital projects for education Mary Ann has always been front and cen-ter. More recently Mary Ann has been a huge supporter of Sandy Hook Village. She understands the importance of local businesses and the impact they have on our community. Mary Ann is always there to help in any way she can. Mary Ann has done a good job as chairman of the council and I believe she deserves the chance to continue her work on both sides of the aisle.
Dan Honan is a fellow Rotarian and he spends countless hours giving back to the community that he has lived in his whole life. Dan is fair and reasonable and looks at each local issue from all sides before making a decision. Dan also deserves to continue his good work on the legislative council.
Please Vote, and please get to know these candidates, don’t just vote for a party vote for those that share you views and are willing to look at others views as well, please join me in voting of Mary Ann and Dan for District 2.

To the Editor:
George Guidera is running for the Legislative Council in District 1 this year. I am confident that he is the best person for the job and that he will be able to perform the duties associated to the role successfully and efficiently, always keeping his constituents in mind.
George was our State Representative and State Senator in Hartford for 12 years. While in Hartford, he recognized that children were not properly being protected from harm and decided to take action through introducing the Connecticut Child Abuse Act as a bill that eventually became a law. For the first time in Connecticut history, the act required mandatory reporting of suspected cases of child abuse. Additionally, he made sure that severe penalties were attached to the law for those who abused children. Who knows how long we would have waited before our children were righteously protected by law without the initiative of George Guidera.
Following his time in Hartford, George was the first selectman in my hometown of Weston for 12 years. He was so popular that, of the six times he ran, he was opposed only once. He also led a drive to increase open space lands in Weston, successfully acquiring gift and the outright purchase of over 1,200 acres by conservation easement. Today, Weston has a huge inventory of municipally owned open space lands available for hiking and spiritual refreshment. I know this because I grew up in Weston next to one of the many open space lands. Because of his accomplishments, he left the first selectman position with a permanent legacy and impression on the people of Weston.
Most important of all, George Guidera is a wonderful person. He has a passion for helping people and making a positive impact in those around him. He genuinely likes interacting with and hearing out his constituents, something that is hard to come by in politics these days. His likability is why he has had a very long and successful tenure in government service.
Although he runs on the Republican ticket, he likes to work with everyone, regardless of their party affiliation or their non-affiliation. He cares only about what is best for the town he serves and has no personal agenda. George now lives in Newtown and I hope you realize just how much you are lucky to have him!
I know all of this from first-hand experience because I am fortunate enough to call him my grandfather. He instilled his passion for helping people through politics in me, along with his other grandchildren, teaching us the value in making an impact in a person’s life. He made a point to make it to our sports games, be present and engaging at all of our birthdays and all holidays, and to encourage us to improve our own skills and succeed in our own goals. I look up to him greatly for everything that he has accomplished in his life and hope that one day I will be able to achieve at least half the amount of what he has achieved in his life.

To the Editor:
Local elections are important! The recent debate over closing an elementary school showed that. Fortunately, whether you felt a school should be closed or not, there was a very healthy debate and town leaders made the wise decision to avoid risking our large state grant for the new elementary school by closing a school.
Now, your vote is necessary to keep all voices in the debate. But, it is difficult to get to know all the candidates. I hope that my thoughts below can help.
First, if you voted for me for state representative in 2012 or Legislative Council in 2013, I ask you to vote for the current council member whom I recommended to replace me when I needed to step down due to new professional commitments: Eva Burmudez Zimmerman. When I recommended Mrs Zimmerman, I knew she would represent District 2 with enthusiasm and dedication – and she has. From helping several neighborhoods with improvement projects, such as the Shady Rest roads and Riverside beach, to voting against civilians bringing firearms in municipal buildings, Mrs Zimmerman has served well. Professionally, she works to ensure that those who work hard in important jobs in our society earn a living wage - a mission we all believe in. Please elect her to a new term on November 3!
Second, in District 3, I endorse Chris Smith and Tony Filiato. Mr Smith is a construction professional and Mr Filiato an international attorney. Both will bring voices of reason to any debate.
Last, townwide, I urge you to vote for the Democratic ticket. Why? Because for so long, many voters have reflexively elected Republicans as the “responsible” thing to do. Nationally, it's now common knowledge that Republicans ran up deficits while Democrats who followed cleaned up the mess. Locally, this has allowed decisions to occur outside of the public, elected realm. For full, public and well-informed debate and decisions, more party balance is needed. You can make this happen by casting ballots for Democrats (and Tony Filiato, a Republican).
Sincerely,
Lisa Romano

To the Editor:
As we acknowledge the four-year anniversary of completion of the Newtown Lyme Disease Task Force report, it is fitting that I take this opportunity to endorse my friend, current vice chair of the Legislative Committee and Task Force Committee compatriot Neil Chaudhary for reelection as District 3 representative to the Legislative Council.
Neil has shown himself to be a personable, high energy, hard working, intelligent Representative for District 3. In these times of fiscal uncertainty, it is important to find solutions that all age groups in Newtown can live with, while not overburdening the tax base.
I believe that Dr Chaudhary has shown a keen understanding of the issues and will continue to work closely with Pat Llodra for the benefit of all Newtowners.
Sincerely,
Peter Licht

To the Editor:
The Board of Finance is experiencing a significant transition this year as veteran members John Kortze, Joe Kearney, Mike Portnoy and Harry Waterbury retire from the board. I want to personally thank all of them for their distinguished service to the town, and also express my appreciation for the time that I worked with them for many years while Director of Finance / Treasurer of our community.
John Godin, David Ruhs, Mark Boland and Sandy Roussas are the Republican candidates for the elected positions on the Board of Finance. Each of these candidates brings a unique set of expertise to the board that will allow for a smooth transition for the upcoming term – and that is why I am supporting each of these candidates.
John Godin is a current member of the Board of Finance with over 25 years of financial services experience in banking, corporate lending and commercial real estate. He is a committed public servant who has taken on a number of leadership roles with other town boards and commissions since moving to Newtown eight years ago.
David Ruhs has 20 years of experience in the finance and banking sectors and is also a local entrepreneur. He currently serves on the Planning and Zoning Board as an Alternate and has been an active and committed member of that board. For the majority of his life he’s lived in Newtown and you can feel his passion for our town when you meet him.
Mark Boland, Sr has lived in town for 20 years and has a long, distinguished career in the insurance industry. Currently he serves as the president of Merit Specialty, a division of Hannover Insurance Company. Mark has a thoughtful, analytical approach to problem solving that will be a strong asset on the Board. He currently serves the town on the Conservation Commission.
Sandy T. Roussas has resided in town for 12 years and brings a unique skill set to the Board of Finance as an experienced litigation attorney. She was honored to have been selected this year to the list of the 2015 Connecticut Super Lawyers and Rising Stars. Sandy brings her key analytical, critical thinking, and her recognition of the importance of maintaining excellence in the educational system.
I hope you will agree and join me on Election Day by supporting John Godin, David Ruhs, Mark Boland, Sr. and Sandy T. Roussas for Board of Finance.

We are writing to enthusiastically endorse Daniel Rosenthal to Newtown's Police Commission. Dan grew up in Newtown and is now raising his family in the town he loves. As a lifelong resident of Newtown, Dan brings a solid perspective to the many issues that face our community. He is an active participant in town, as he is a member and on the Board of Rotary Club of Newtown. Dan is also a coach and board member of the Newtown Lacrosse Association.
Dan is a person of upstanding character and true integrity. Dan has the capacity to act fairly while having the ability to articulate and make concise decisions based on information. We value his hard work, family and community ethics. Dan, and his wife, Meri, have instilled caring and supportive qualities into their family as they are often seen volunteering throughout the community.
Please show Dan your support by voting him to Newtown's Police Commission. He will use his clear judgment and Newtown experience to make the right decisions.

To the Editor:
I am writing to endorse Mark Boland for the Newtown Board of Finance. I have lived in Newtown with my wife, Michele, for over 20 years. We were fortunate that our three daughters, Nicole, Abby and Anna, had the benefit of attending the Newtown schools because they were well prepared for college and beyond. Our friends and our town have certainly given us so much to be thankful for, and I am confident that Newtown will benefit from Mark’s leadership and guidance on the Board of Finance.
Over the 20 years I have known Mark, he has demonstrated success as a leading executive in the insurance industry through the exceptional growth and returns of the companies he has led. In a town that is heavily reliant on property tax revenue as a source of income, Mark’s fiscal management experience will be invaluable in controlling expenses, in turn limiting the tax burden on residents. Additionally, Mark recognizes the importance of achieving the best possible financial rating for Newtown to minimize borrowing costs, and he has pledged to utilize the experience he has in working with the rating agencies to maintain the AAA rating the town worked so long and hard to attain.
With the ever increasing cost of maintenance and improvements to the town’s extensive infrastructure, Newtown will continue to face challenges in maintaining the same high quality of life that it affords it current residents. Mark’s demonstrated ability to work with a team, provide a fair hearing to all points of view and build consensus will serve Newtown well as it works to meet its financial obligations while adhering to the constraints of sound financial standards. I am confident that Mark has the integrity, skills and experience to serve as a member of the Newtown Board of Finance, and he has my unqualified endorsement and support.
Sincerely,

To the Editor:
I would like to endorse and recommend my wife, Maureen Crick Owen, who is running for reelection as a Democratic candidate for the Newtown Board of Assessment Appeals.
As a member of the board for the last four years, Maureen has served conscientiously, diligently and with integrity.
Maureen is a lifelong resident of Newtown and a graduate from Newtown High School. She has been actively involved in Newtown’s affairs for many years: since 1996 she has served as clerk for the Borough of Newtown Zoning Board of Appeals and Zoning Commission. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Family Counseling Center from 1996 until 1998 and she has been helping to run the Newtown Village Cemetery Association since the mid 1990s, initially serving as Sexton and now as president since 2008. Since 2009, she has been actively involved with and serves as a board member on the Newtown Parks and Recreation Commission.
Maureen also has extensive professional experience with real estate and the legal profession, having worked as a paralegal for a number of well established and respected private practice law firms and corporations.
Maureen’s continuing commitment to serving our community and her professional experience uniquely qualifies her to continue representing Newtown in this role. I hope that you will vote for Maureen, as I will, to help her win reelection and provide her with the opportunity to continue to serve Newtown on the Board of Assessment Appeals.
Sincerely yours,

To the Editor:
I enthusiastically endorse Rebekah Harriman-Stites, Democrat, for a seat on the Newtown Board of Education. She is a compassionate leader committed to public service and improving the quality of life for all.
I was Rebekah’s professor when she was a student in the social work major at Central Connecticut State University and remained in contact since her graduation. Early on I recognized her leadership as inspired and above self-interest, and am pleased to support her candidacy for the Board of Education.
Rebekah values an effective and functioning school board, and has the policy and interpersonal skills to elevate its capacity. She is politically astute and knowledgeable of the policy arena, and is informed of the many issues confronting public education today. Rebekah will engage everyone in conversation and has the capacity to respect all perspectives. Her ability to listen and understand divergent opinions is one of her strongest skills that will be an asset for the Board. She will “do her homework” to achieve a thorough understanding of the issues, before making difficult decisions. The residents of Newtown can be confident that Rebekah will always advocate in the best interest of the Newtown children in the context of school and community.
Without hesitation I believe that a vote for Rebekah Harriman-Stites, Democrat, for a seat on the Newtown Board of Education will be a vote for promising futures for all Newtown children.
Sincerely,

I have been a colleague of Aaron Carlson's for almost eight years now. When I heard Aaron was running for the Newtown Board of Finance I thought – he’s the perfect fit! I won’t pretend to know the challenges that face Newtown as I am not a resident – but I can tell you that I know Aaron and know that he would be the best fit for Newtown Board of Finance! Aaron has worked in finance for Nestle Waters for 15 years and definitely knows the intricacies of planning and managing budgets. Expertise aside, he is an all-around good person. He is honest, a good listener, and someone you want on your team. He takes action when needed. I specifically recall a challenging experience I had in a previous role, and Aaron was there to listen and help me through. I have never told Aaron how much that conversation meant to me, but I am constantly grateful that Aaron was there for me and to help me through the challenge.
Outside of work, I know Aaron is a great husband and loving father. He cares greatly about his community as demonstrated in his work through Newtown Kindness. All of these qualities combined make Aaron an excellent choice for the Newtown Board of Finance.
Sincerely,

I would like to take this opportunity to endorse my husband, Andrew Clure, for the Newtown Board of Education. When Andy and I first discussed his potential candidacy for the BOE, I knew in my heart that he should go for it. This is really where he is meant to serve our community – where he can make a positive impact for our children.
Since becoming a Newtown Resident 14 years ago, Andy has given freely of his time – in the schools, on field trips and coaching but his true community service began with the co-founding of the Sandy Hook Arcade Center three years ago. At a time when Newtown needed to look within to find strength Andy was one of the many who stepped up to do what he could to bringing some healing to Newtown. The SHAC was the catalyst that drove Andy to deepen his service ties. As a board member of the Edmond Town Hall Theatre and the co-chair for the Newtown Community Center Commission he spends many hours a week focusing on ways to foster the family and community environment that we all cherish.
Professionally, Andy is very accomplished in the marketing and advertising industry. With a degree in economics from Southern Methodist University and experience managing multi-million dollar budgets for clients like the US Army, Dr. Pepper, Pitney Bowes and Priceline he is well positioned to handle the budgetary and fiscal responsibilities of the BOE. Throughout his career he has been both a team player and a leader. In business and in personal life there are tough decisions to make and problems to solve. Andy has always taken a thoughtful approach to both with a focus on action.
Energy, fortitude, and experience… Andy will bring all these to his position if elected to the Board of Education for Newtown. He understands the ripple affect a strong education system has on our community at large. I am confident Andy will work hard to create a balance for our children that will prepare them to become successful young people.
Please join me on November 3 to cast your vote for Andrew Clure, Board of Education.
Sincerely,
Lori Clure

We would like to endorse Sandy Roussas for Board of Finance. We’ve known Sandy since she moved to Newtown 12 years ago when she was 22 years old and had just married our neighbor’s son, Nick. We’ve seen Sandy complete law school and take her place in our community both as a professional and as a mother to her “little monkeys,” Eleni and Petros.
Knowing Sandy, her hard work ethic and all that she stands for, we know that she will look out for families struggling to stay in Newtown. If you want to elect someone who comes from a hard working family, who works hard herself and who understands the daily struggles that families face, then she is the candidate to vote for.

I’m writing to support and endorse Sandy Roussas for the Board of Finance. I’ve known Sandy since she was a law student. During the summer between her first and second year of law school in 2004, Sandy volunteered as an intern for the Connecticut Public Defender’s office in Bridgeport. There, I witnessed firsthand her blossoming skills as a lawyer.
Since then, I’ve seen Sandy grow as a litigator, and I’m happy to call her my friend. I know that her skills and smarts will serve the Board of Finance well. Please join me in supporting her on November 3 with your vote.

To the Editor:
Every election cycle the Democratic and Republican Town Committees endorse a list of candidates they believe to be uniquely qualified to serve the Newtown community in various elected offices. On occasion, a third party emerges to do the same.
Having served on Newtown’s Legislative Council and as a state Representative in the Connecticut General Assembly, I have seen firsthand the importance of electing competent people from a wide range of backgrounds, political affiliations, professions, and experiences.
While there are many diverse and uniquely qualified candidates from both sides of the aisle who deserve your vote this election, there are two whose candidacies I endorse without reservation: Rebekah Harriman-Stites (Board of Education) and James Gaston (Board of Finance).
As a mom, a social worker, a professional fundraiser, and a past PTA president, Rebekah will bring a unique set of knowledge, values, and skills to the Board of Education. Her unwavering advocacy for Newtown’s students and her understanding of the increasingly complex needs in our schools sets her aside from many other candidates. Rebekah is a proven community leader whose compassion and rich understanding of the issues has enabled her to help build a stronger, more connected community.
In addition to Rebekah, Jim Gaston has ushered Newtown through some of its most challenging times. For the last four years, Jim has served on the Board of Selectmen with both integrity and compassion, fighting to ensure the complex needs of all of Newtown’s citizens were always represented.
Prior to his service on the Board of Selectmen, Jim served as the Vice Chair of the Board of Finance for ten years. In this position, Jim was a champion for education and was a model for collaborative problem solving and leadership. He is ethical, compassionate, and always serves with integrity. I cannot think of anyone better to serve as a steward of Newtown’s tax dollars then Jim Gaston.
In conclusion, Newtown is blessed to have many people from both political parties willing to give their time and energy to this community. Jim Gaston and Rebekah Harriman-Stites represent the best of that pool of candidates and I fully endorse their respective candidacies.
Please remember to vote for Jim Gaston and Rebekah Harriman-Stites on November 3! Your vote matters and it makes a difference.
All my best,
Christopher Lyddy

I am writing in support of Chris Smith for legislative Council of Newtown.
Having known Chris as a father, friend and fellow Newtown resident for over 12 years, I can strongly recommend him for public office. His passion for Newtown, the people who live here and the quality of life this community represents are dear to his heart and at the center of his desire to run for office.
Chris is a determined, hard working, organized leader whether it be at the office or on the soccer field. He is a compassionate listener, thoughtful to react and stays focused on the task at hand. I believe with Chris' strong collaborative abilities, he will be an asset to Newtown's leadership for years to come.

Please support Barbara Manville for Planning and Zoning alternate. She has become a close family friend since moving to Sandy Hook with her husband, Jim, and sons, Bill and Dave, 20 years ago. Barb has served our community in a variety of ways over the years. She has been involved with Cub Scouts, Sandy Hook School PTA, Girl Scouts, Newtown High School Band Parents, Danbury Women's Center, Newtown United Methodist Church, Newtown Action Alliance, and The Newtown Foundation. She participates in 5K walks for various local charities and feels strongly about supporting town businesses by shopping Newtown first.
A graduate of Bryant University, Barb has a strong financial background and enjoys giving back to her community. Civic-minded, enthusiastic, informed, and responsible are a few characteristics that best describe Barb.
Barbara Manville will serve us well as an alternate member of the Planning and Zoning Committee. Please vote to elect her on November 3!

We are extremely excited to hear that our friend and neighbor Sandy Roussas was running for Newtown’s Board of Finance. We’ve known Sandy and her family since we moved to Newtown 10 years ago. In the last 10 years, we’ve seen Sandy graduate law school and grow her family. We know that she will bring the same dedication she has to her work and her family to the Board of Finance and we feel confident that she will work hard for everyone’s interests.
Please vote for her on November 3rd as we will be!

If you are looking to vote for someone who is running for all the right reasons, vote Aaron Carlson for Newtown Board of Finance. When we say he is running for all the right reasons, we mean that he does not have some hidden political agenda, that he truly cares about the community, and that he has real life financial leadership experience that he can offer our great town.
Aaron is being endorsed by the Democratic Party, although he is not a registered Democrat, because they believe in his qualifications and so do we. After all, we want our Board of Finance focusing on the real issues not political agendas.
Aaron has 17+ years of real financial leadership experience in a multi-billion dollar, international corporation. I know this because I have worked side-by-side with Aaron for over 12 of those years. He leads a finance team of over 30 professionals while governing a budget of over $800MM. In our business, there are quite often differences of opinions amongst leadership on certain issues. One of the qualities that I have always admired about Aaron was his ability to challenge fellow leadership, in a professional manner, even when his opinion may differ than the majority in the room. It is not so much his willingness to offer his opinions but how he goes about it. He always sticks to the facts and backs up his rationale with real data. More importantly, Aaron has a way of dealing with others that, even though he may be telling them something that they do not want to hear, they always value and look to him for his opinion. Aaron is a true asset of our company and a true asset of the town of Newtown!
Aaron’s commitment to community is second to none. He is the founder and chairman of a non-profit organization, Newtown Kindness, the co-founder of the newly organized Newtown Education Foundation and has volunteered as a Newtown Soccer club coach for six years. Lisa and I both had the great pleasure of working alongside Aaron as part of Newtown Kindness where he personally touched our whole family. Newtown Kindness started as nothing more than an idea and Aaron personally grew the effort into a 501(c)3 registered non-profit organization, with a Board of Directors and over 200 volunteers whose primary focus is embedding kindness into our youths everyday mindset. What he has accomplished in that period was absolutely amazing to be part of. He knows how to succeed and have an impact.
If you want someone on our Board of Finance that you can trust and is there for all the right reasons, then vote Aaron Carlson this November 3rd.

Newtown is not just a place but an attitude, with a global grip. I am taking time from my trip in Knokke-Heist Belgium to express my support for Mark Boland in his quest for a position on Newtown's Board of Finance.
Who am I? I've been a resident of Newtown for over 27 years. First as a homeowner, recently as an apartment dweller (retired and downsized). In such time our town has grown and so too (I assume) has the complexity of running its financial engine.
Who is Mark Boland? A friend, a Newtownian and a businessman. A friend who helped my wife and me settle into our home in Sandy Hook. A Newtonian (need I say more). A businessman, with whom I worked, who successfully brokered million dollar deals, not only by dint of his knowledge of numbers but of his way with people.
In short Mark is an individual I would trust holding my wallet.
Sincerely,

I am writing to endorse Ryan Knapp for reelection to the Legislative Council representing District 2. As both a lifelong resident and local business owner I’ve experienced firsthand that Newtown is not as affordable as it once was. Ryan has seen this as well and made financial responsibility a priority in his campaign two years ago. In this past term he was part of the team that saw a zero percent tax increase and a decrease in taxes last year while maintaining existing services. This was done through prudent spending, finding efficiencies and managed borrowing; things I appreciate as a business owner.
Ryan is always willing to sit and discuss what is going on. Talking to him has kept me up to date and clarified a lot of misinformation which has a habit of making its way around town. He has done a lot of good for Newtown in two years, from reworking our tax program for seniors, implementing a tax benefit for 100 percent disabled veterans to speaking at the state level about prevailing wage and how it limits our ability to address Fairfield Hills. I was shocked when he told me we spend six figures a year in police time responding to false alarms and only two or three are real. The Alarm Ordinance he has been working on should greatly reduce lost resources at our Police Department. For a volunteer, he does so much more than just show up to meetings and I really appreciate that.
On November 3rd, please join me in reelecting Ryan Knapp.

I’m a partner at the law firm of Neubert, Pepe & Monteith, and I hired Sandy Roussas almost six years ago. Prior to hiring Sandy, I witnessed her skills as a lawyer firsthand and was delighted when she expressed an interest in working for my firm.
Since joining NPM, Sandy has grown into a formidable litigator. As an advocate, she defends her position and stands her ground when it matters. Likewise, she is able to acknowledge and engage with opposing views in a respectful, courteous way. As an advisor, she is able to get to the core of an issue quickly, investigate and analyze the facts in a thoughtful way, and come to a reasoned, informed recommendation. I’ve seen Sandy seamlessly shift from the role of a leader to that of a team player and back again.
As someone who has experience in public service in the Town of Monroe, I know what it takes to take on the duties of a local government board and I can state without hesitation that Sandy has what it takes. She has the instincts and the intelligence to successfully serve the residents of Newtown as a member of the Board of Finance and, if elected, she will do so with wholehearted support from me and my firm.
Please support Sandy Roussas on November 3.

I am happy to write this letter to endorse Aaron Carlson for Newtown Board of Finance. I met Mr Carlson in January, 2013 when he came to my fifth grade classroom to talk to us about Newtown Kindness. He shared with us how any act of kindness, big or small, can have a positive impact. Mr Carlson inspired my friends and I to make kindness our personal mission. He has supported and encouraged us every step of the way.
Mr Carlson is a great leader who cares deeply for our community. If I were old enough I would vote for Mr Carlson. He is an excellent choice for Newtown Board of Finance.

To the Editor:
I have known Aaron Carlson nearly all of my adult life and have observed him in many different roles. When I learned that he had decided to roll up his sleeves and run for an elected office in his town, I was not at all surprised. In fact, what I really thought was: “I sure hope Newtown knows how lucky they are.” I say this because this is what I know for sure about Aaron.
He is a man of integrity, honesty, and compassion. He doesn’t desire to be the man with all the right answers, but he cares about doing the right thing. He cares deeply about his family, friends, and community. If he sees a need, he helps. He is a true leader, but is probably happier when he sees others shine. He is smart. He possesses a skill set and knowledge base that make him the ideal candidate for the job which he seeks.
Full disclosure, I am a registered Republican and proud to be a member of the Board of Education in the town in which I am grateful to live. I share my opinion of Aaron with my Newtown neighbors not just because I respect and admire Aaron, but because it gives me hope knowing that people of this caliber are stepping up in their towns to serve. No town should take this for granted. I hope Newtown knows how lucky they are.
Sincerest Regards,
Kasey Diotte

I am writing this letter of endorsement for Rebekah Harriman-Stites for Board of Education.
In my opinion, a strong candidate for Board of Education is someone who cares about education in our town. That person is involved in our schools and our community. Ideally, that person has children in our schools and knows what is happening in our schools. That person is Rebekah Harriman-Stites.
Rebekah is a past PTA President at Middle Gate Elementary School, co-founder of My Sandy Hook Family Fund, on the Board of Directors for EverWonder Children’s Museum and professionally has a consulting firm that obtains grants for non-profits.
Even more importantly, Rebekah is a strong advocate for education, will work collaboratively to maintain and enhance education, is dedicated to our town and our schools and will work tirelessly to ensure the best for our children.
Rebekah is the right choice for the Board of Education and for the students, teachers and staff of the Newtown Public Schools.
Thank you,
Karyn Holden

To the Editor:
I’m writing to express my support for Mary Ann Jacob for the Legislative Council in District 2. I’ve had the distinct pleasure of working with Mary Ann on many issues for the benefit of Newtown. Whether it was advocating for educational programs, implementing incentives to help business locate or expand in town, facilitating difficult conversation on ordinances, bringing officials together to confront difficult and challenging issue, keeping your taxes low or helping various town organizations forward their cause, Mary Ann has always been an outstanding representative for all of Newtown.
Mostly, I think one of Mary Ann’s most admirable qualities is her courage to lead in all situations regardless of whether they issue is simple or complex, easy or difficult and you can always expect her to address the most challenging issues head on.
Leadership is a quality necessary in Newtown and Mary Ann is a strong and reasoned leader and has represented Newtown well. She has a passion for giving all Newtowner’s a voice. I enthusiastically encourage your support for Mary Ann Jacob for Legislative Council, District 2.

I would like to endorse Sandy Roussas for the Newtown Board of Finance. I have gotten to know Sandy over the last couple of years, and know that she will work hard to make Newtown a better place to live for everyone.
Sandy has recently become an officer of our Parent Teacher Organization at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Bridgeport. She has become a vital part of our organization and has taken charge of a lot of our activities. She is always willing to jump in and help anyone who needs it.
Newtown needs someone who is always looking to better the community. I have no doubt that Sandy would do an amazing job as a member of the Board of Finance. With her law background, and her heart of gold, Newtown could not go wrong with this candidate.

We endorse Kelley Johnson for Board of Finance. Kelley has corporate experience that relates directly to budgetary matters. She has forecast long-term needs in strategic roles and managed budgets in operational roles. Kelley has the strength of character to demand transparency from the Boards of Selectman and Education and will make sure that she both receives and understands all the facts before making any recommendation. Kelley’s broad skill-set enables her to comprehend the multi-faceted needs of any organization or entity. She will call the bluff on ideological arguments and responsibly analyze town financial matters.
We are voting for Kelley Johnson for Board of Finance. Please join us!

With great pleasure and sincerity I would like to endorse Jim Gaston Sr. for the position of Board of Finance. I have been lucky to know Jim, Stephanie and family for over 25 years. Jim's track record as a great citizen of Newtown, his last four years on the Board of Selectman, and prior 10 years vice chair-person-Board of Finance, makes Jim an excellent choice for this important position.
Please support Jim Gaston for his candidacy to return to the Board of Finance.
Thanks!

To the Editor:
This Election Day, there are many local issues worth pondering. It is an obligation to vote individually for those who support particular views, procedures and policies..
As an example, those who support neighborhood schools, and do not support the thinly veiled at-tempts that continue to surface to close Hawley School without the views and opinions of the electorate being aired or considered, either at local governing boards purporting to represent the community, or at appropriate public forums (including a referendum), have a clear choice ... Vote Democrat next Tuesday to assure that all voices are heard before the very fabric of the community is altered. Consider this an S.O.S.
Sincerely,

To the Editor:
I am writing in support of two very fine candidates for the Board of Finance – Kelley Johnson and James Gaston, Sr. Anyone who has been following their campaign or knows either of them, under-stands how well qualified both are for these seats.
Kelley and Jim have been supporters of our students and our schools for many years. Kelley and Jim have both been members of our panels of judges for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Voice of Democracy Audio-Essay Competitions. Jim has been head of the panel of judges for our Newtown Post student es-says. Kelley has been lead judge for Voice of Democracy for VFW District 1 (Fairfield County). Both positions carry much responsibility and we appreciate all their time and support.
Kelley, a graduate of Newtown High School and Band Alumna, continues to follow the Newtown High School Marching Nighthawks in competition. She can also be seen on the sidelines of the girls’ soccer games as she cheers the team to victory after having been a leader in the political battle to establish a girls’ soccer team at Newtown High School in the 1980s. Her Newtown pride and community service can only be surpassed by her professional accomplishments in high-tech strategy and management. She has crunched numbers throughout her career and presented analytical data for extremely high-level and high-value decisions. She would be an extraordinary asset to Newtown as a member of the Board of Finance.
Jim has given countless volunteer hours to Newtown over the years. His many efforts include: Se-lectman, Board of Selectmen, 2011 to present; vice chair of the Board of Finance, 2001 – 2011; Warden, Borough of Newtown, 2007 – present; Board of Burgesses, Borough of Newtown, 1993 – 2007; Board of Directors, Family Counseling Center, 1992 – 2000; Town of Newtown, School HVAC Committee, 2001; Founder, Western United Extreme, Inc., Girl’s Premier Soccer Club, Board Member 2004 – 2013.
I cannot think of two finer candidates to represent our town on the Board of Finance. I ask you to join me this election day in voting for Kelley Johnson and James Gaston Sr. God bless our town!

To the Editor:
Please help me to support and vote for Chris Smith for Legislative Council in District 3. In knowing Chris and his family for most of the 18 years my family and I have lived in Newtown I am thrilled about his desire to take a proactive role in taking a position to help shape the direction of our town by running for Legislative Council in District 3.
I know Chris to be a dedicated family man with intelligence and business savvy who is very knowledgeable about local issues and one who is concerned about all these issues and challenges that affect our everyday lives. I would count on him to play an integral part in guiding us through these challenges over the next few years.
I endorse Chris and hope you will join me in voting for him for Legislative Council in District 3 as I believe Chris will be a great candidate for the position and a solid asset to serve us and the town quite well.
Respectfully submitted,

To the Editor:
Many of us choose to move to Newtown over the last twenty years for what we perceived to be a high quality of life. Whether drawn by effective schools, small-town community values, preserved open-space, or an array of excellent town-facilities, we choose Newtown—and we continue to make our homes here by choice.
One question makes the election Tuesday the most important we have faced in years: what can we do to make Newtown the community more people choose? What is our plan to increase school enrollment, grow the grand-list, and develop new community facilities? What is our vision to grow Newtown in a balanced way?
I cannot accept a vision of inevitable decline in Newtown. That is not why I chose this community—twice, purchasing a house in Sandy Hook in 2003 and moving to a larger home in Hawleyville in 2014. My family has doubled-down on Newtown, and we are committed to a town with a positive future.
I urge all members of the community to support new voices in this election to bring balance to town deliberations, more transparency in long-term planning, and a new vision for future growth.
I ask you to consider voting for three candidates, who are new to local government and who have been moved to bring their energy, commitment, and intelligence to help develop a plan for our town that will encourage more people to choose Newtown for their businesses and homes: Judit DeStefano (D) Legislative Council District 1; Rebekah Harriman Stites (D) Board of Education; Aaron Carlson (D) Board of Finance.
I know Judit, Rebekah, and Aaron as level-headed, knowledgeable, and incredibly dedicated parents and citizens of Newtown. They have no ideological agenda and no preconception about the “facts” of Newtown’s decline. They bring instead experience and excellence in several different fields (education, fund-raising, finance, small-business) and a commitment to fairness and transparency in decision-making and planning for the future of Newtown. I can’t say it any better than they do, so please read their candidate statements, learn about them on local social media sites, and meet them in person! These are three new voices who will help make Newtown the place people choose.

To the Editor:
I would like to personally endorse John Vouros and Rebekah Harriman-Stites for the Board of Education. John Vouros, with whom I have served on the Board of Education for the past two years of his four-year tenure, has been a tremendous model for me. He has a laser-focused passion for doing what is best for children and puts it to good service. Every decision he makes is based, not only on maintaining our schools, but also enhancing them. He has contributed to the growing enthusiasm within the district, under Dr Erardi’s leadership, by serving on several key subcommittees. He has worked diligently to improve the culture and climate in the district and his dedication to the students is unwavering.
Rebekah Harriman-Stites comes with a spark that will ignite innovative ideas. She is familiar with the issues we face and brings a fresh point of view to the discussion. As a parent at Middle Gate, I have seen her dedication to the school, volunteering long hours, as the PTA president, bringing parents and staff together. She impressively and successfully headed efforts that enhanced the school cafeteria through a grant and that saw 100 percent of the teaching staff participating in the PTA. I have also witnessed her work on the Municipal Building Strategic Planning Committee, where she contributes an objective voice and good ideas. She brings her experience as a fundraiser and as someone who has worked with a variety of community groups.
In the coming years, the Board of Education faces challenges – addressing the unique social and emotional needs of our student population, meeting the challenge to inspire each student to excel, and adjusting to accommodate the nadir of an enrollment wave that will move out of the elementary schools and up through the middle and upper grades. Newtown needs people dedicated to making decisions that will help our students and our community, not just today, but over the long term. John Vouros and Rebekah Harriman-Stites fit the bill. Please join me in voting for John and Rebekah.

To the Editor:
I have been a Newtown resident for over 18 years. I moved to town because I thought it was a great place to raise a family, and I still carry that belief. I am writing to express my strong support for two candidates seeking your vote on Tuesday. One is my wife, Rebekah Harriman-Stites, for Board of Education, and the other is our friend, Judit DeStefano, for Legislative Council (District 1).
I cannot say enough about Rebekah's commitment to our community. This commitment can be clearly seen in her co-founding the My Sandy Hook Family Fund, her leadership on the Middle Gate School PTA, and her role on the EverWonder Board of Directors. She truly gives 100 percent to every endeavor she is a part of, and is driven by the core belief that she can and will make Newtown the best possible community it can be for not only our son, but for every child in the district. I know that she will carry that commitment to the Board of Education, putting her leadership skills, fundraising experience, and collaborative nature to their best possible use.
I have known Judit DeStefano for over five years and can speak to her ability to research and truly understand an issue from all sides. These abilities, coupled with her open communication style will make her a perfect fit for Legislative Council. I am confident that she will serve District 1 and our entire community well, ensuring that we are moving our town forward, with the best interests of all residents on her mind.
This coming Tuesday, I will proudly cast my votes for both Rebekah and Judit and I hope you will join me to elect these two highly qualified individuals.
