NMS Student Council Elected
Newtown Middle School’s 2014-15 Student Council officers were elected on Friday, October 10.
Voting took place in classrooms after contenders for the four positions gave speeches in the middle school’s auditorium.
Competing for the position of president were Bryce Bisset, Jackson Mittleman, and Ben Talbot. Vice president candidates were Lauren Kohler, Alexa Lugo, Declan O’Grady, Meghan O’Rourke, and Sarah Payne. Carly Swierbut was the only student up for the position of treasurer. Contenders for the position of spokesperson were Kevin Gong, Catie Gregory, Julie Hess, and Mark Maksel.
During multiple assemblies on Friday, each of the candidates delivered speeches to introduce themselves to their fellow middle school students. The speeches marked the final round for the Student Council campaign. Each of the students had already worked hard in applying for his or her desired position and were interviewed by Student Council advisors Nadia Papalia, Abigail Olsen, and Stephanie Glynn.
After the assemblies were held, votes were tallied for the 2014-15 Student Council representatives, and Bryce Bisset was voted as president, Lauren Kohler and Declan O’Grady earned spots as co-vice presidents, Carly Swierbut earned her unchallenged position as treasurer, and Kevin Gong was voted in as spokesperson.
When giving his speech, Bryce used snippets from popular song lyrics throughout his speech. He told the gathered students that the Student Council exists “to say what you want to say.”
And, near the end of this speech, Bryce promised, “I would walk 500 miles and I would walk 500 more if it meant helping Newtown Middle School.”
