Occupation: I’m a secretary at Newtown High School in the attendance office. I’ve been there for 25 years.

Family: My husband Chris and I have been married for 47 years. We met our junior year at Bassick High School in Bridgeport. We have four sons. Christopher III, Thomas and his wife, Andrea, Stephen, and Anthony and his wife, Tina. We also have six grandchildren, Kristina, Alicia, Vincent, Ryan, Brianna, and Sarah.

Pets: Over the years we have had three dogs. A black poodle named Domino, and two Dalmatians, Soccer and Hudson. We got Hudson from a breeder who was located in the Battery Park section of New York City on the Hudson River. Sadly, Hudson had to be put down a few months ago. So right now, we have no pets.

How long have you lived in Newtown? Chris and I moved to Newtown from Bridgeport in 1965. Our parents thought we had moved to the woods, because Newtown was not so populated then. But they still came to see us every weekend.

What do you like to do in your free time? I like to bake and cook. I remember my mom and her sisters baking for the holidays, so it brings back pleasant memories. I also like to flower garden. I volunteer at my church. And when I have time, I like to read decorating books and nonfiction. You can learn a life lesson from nonfiction.

Do you have a favorite book? The memoir of Corrie Ten Boom, The Hiding Place, is a great book. She was in Auschwitz during the Holocaust. Because she survived she felt that she owed it to the world to tell her story. She wanted people to know that her faith got her through all of that. I also like to read books by Joyce Meyer, a Christian author, who writes on handling life. She has overcome a lot herself in life.

Do you have a favorite travel destination? Chris and I and our sons always went camping in the New England states. I always liked anyplace by the ocean. New Hampshire was a favorite of mine because of the magnificent scenery. I’ve always thought we lived in one of the most beautiful areas in New England, especially in the fall.

What is the best thing about Newtown? The scenic views, especially from Castle Hill Road. Many times I park up there and read my scriptures, it is so peaceful. And I love seeing my students, former students, and their parents around town. It gives me a warm feeling about our town.

What are some of the changes in Newtown that you have seen? Of course, the population has expanded so, especially in the schools. There are so many more developments in the town. But it still has such a beautiful nature, to me. The character of the town hasn’t changed.

If you could spend a day with anyone, whom would you choose? I would pick someone with perseverance, like Helen Keller. She was blind, deaf, and mute, but made something of herself. I admire people with perseverance.

Do you have a personal philosophy? I once received a piece of literature in the mail and on it, it said, “Encouragement is oxygen to the soul.” I laminated it, and it is on the wall by my desk to remind me to gently encourage the students I see, as much as I can.

What is the best gift you have ever received? I’m fortunate to have such a loving husband for so many years. And it is heartwarming to hear our children repeat to their children the principles that Chris and I taught them. You always wonder how much your children grasp. The best gift of all, is that all of our children and grandchildren are healthy and live right here in Newtown .
