Ellington And Beyond, October 24

DANBURY — On Saturday, October 24, at 8 pm, Danbury Music Centre will present Michael Bank’s Big 7 in a program of jazz and swing entitled “Ellington and Beyond.” The small ensemble of four mixed horns plus three rhythm section players draws from the tradition of the small swing unit, which came into vogue in the 1940s and provides an economical but surprisingly versatile musical palette.

The first half of the program will feature selections, both well known and not so well known, by Duke Ellington. This part will also include a tribute to Danbury native Hilton Jefferson who played alto saxophone with Ellington in the 1950s.

The second half of the program will continue with some fun swing era lesser pieces as well as original compositions by the band’s leader Michael Bank.

Michael Bank’s Big 7 has been performing in New York and Connecticut for over 15 years. They have performed at Birdland and the Cotton Club among other venues. They were the accompanying band of the tap dancing group The Silver Belles for several years and have shared the stage with Sister Sledge, Buster Brown, and Savion Glover.

The current band is made up of Kris Allen and Mike Mullins on alto saxophones, Danbury’s own Eddie Bert on trombone, Andrew Tait on baritone saxophone, Michael Bank on piano, Kelly Freisen on double bass, and Steve Little on drums.

Admission is free. Danbury Music Centre is at 256 Main Street.
