PENN MUSEUM WILL CELEBRATE LOREN EISELEY BIRTHDAY NOV. 1

AVV 10-17 #716233

PHILADELPHIA, PENN. — Penn Museum, the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, will present Loren Eiseley’s 100th Birthday Celebration, on Thursday, November 1, at 6 pm. The free program is open to all.

Penn Museum celebrates Eiseley’s 100th birthday with a lecture about his life and work by Mark Frazier Lloyd, director of the University of Pennsylvania Archives and Records Center. Eiseley was a respected anthropologist, University of Pennsylvania provost, science writer, ecologist and poet. He published books of essays, biography, and general science in the 1950s–70.

Eiseley is best known for the poetic essay style, called the “hidden essay,” which he used to explain complex scientific ideas, such as human evolution, to the general public. He is also known for his writings about humanity’s relationship with the natural world — writings that helped to inspire the modern environmental movement.

Penn Museum is at 3260 South Street (on the Penn campus across from Franklin Field). For general information, www.museum.upenn.edu or 215-898-4890.
