Volleyball Team Advances To Semis, Soccer Team Goes To PKs

Newtown High School's girls' volleyball squad, the No. 2 seed in the South-West Conference Tournament, defeated No. 7 Bethel 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-8) at NHS on October 22.

With the win the Nighthawks will host No. 3 Masuk of Monroe in the Thursday, October 24, semifinals at 6 pm.

Newtown was led by Gianna Galassi with 13 kills, an ace, a block, and four digs, Sara Heinen logged eight kills, an ace, and three digs; Allie Nowacki recorded eight kills, an ace, and four blocks; Cassie Pickering had five aces, four kills, a block, and a dig; Ava Lombardo racked up 35 assists to go along with a kill, and two blocks; Addy Cordova had three aces and four digs; and Sarah Hubner added and ace and a trio of digs.

On the soccer pitch No. 6 Newtown went to No. 3 Brookfield and fell 1-0 (3-1 in penalty kicks) in the SWC quarterfinals. Newtown nearly avenged a pair of hard-fought 1-0 defeats to Brookfield during the regular season.
