Field Hockey Team’s Senior Night Halted By Weather
Already having played a trio of overtime games, two of which ended in ties, Newtown High School’s field hockey team left the field in a deadlock on Senior Night, when Immaculate of Danbury visited Blue & Gold Stadium, on October 17.
This game, however, is not yet an official tie. In fact, there may very well be a winner in this contest after all. That’s because the game was halted when there was lightning in the area with the teams locked up in a 1-1 battle during the second quarter. It will resume right where it left off, back at the Blue & Gold turf on Monday, October 24, at 4:30 pm.
Annika Bozentko tipped home the Newtown goal, assisted by Summer Harrell. Newtown Coach John Savage noted that it was a good game until the rain put a pause on things.
Assuming Mother Nature cooperates, Savage’s Nighthawks will have had two more games under their belts before the Immaculate matchup is completed to end the regular season. After Wednesday’s visit to Joel Barlow of Redding, the Hawks take on FCIAC foe Greenwich on the road Saturday, October 22, at 9 am.
The Hawks are coming off a 4-0 setback to Ridgefield of the FCIAC on the road on October 15. The host Tigers dominated the opening quarter to do all of its scoring. Newtown’s defense tightened up and held the Tigers scoreless the rest of the way but the Nighthawks could not find the back of the cage.
“Offensively, Newtown couldn’t put together enough offensive chances to score. Effort was good but players need to make better decisions. We make great defensive plays to stop our opponents but many times we give the ball right back,” Savage said.
The Newtown coach liked what he was seeing against a tough Immaculate team that has only lost twice this fall. Seniors Alison Powers, Nella Walsh, Ellie Meyer, and Shannon Hegarty were recognized. Newtown carried a record of 4-6-2-1 into the game.
