Active Resident Of Newtown For Many Years [/naviga:h2]

William F. “Bill” Campbell, 89, of Auburn, Maine, formerly of Newtown and Southbury, died October 16 at his home in Schooner Estates. He was born November 6, 1920, in Alhambra, Calif., the son of William T. and Margaret Heid Campbell.

He is survived by his three daughters and their families: Anne Campbell and husband David Kyle of St Johnsbury, Vt., Margaret Campbell of Block Island, and Susan Campbell and husband, Jack Lipshultz, of Takoma Park, Md.; and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Jane Wheeler Campbell.

His college years at the United States Naval Academy were interrupted by World War II, and he went to the South Pacific to serve as a lieutenant on the USS Washington and USS Colorado. After the war he received an MBA at Stanford University.

Over his lifetime, he worked as a sales engineer for a number of businesses. In 1958 he married Jane Wheeler and they raised a family in Newtown. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where he served as part of the usher ministry. He also was a member of the Rotary Club of Newtown, and the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission.

Mr Campbell was an avid vegetable gardener, stamp collector, and fan of the Red Sox and UConn Huskies basketball. He greatly enjoyed reading, particularly history, and exploring his Irish and Scottish heritage, as well as eating ice cream (especially strawberry).

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 6, his 90th birthday, at 11 am, in the memorial garden at Trinity Episcopal Church in Newtown, followed by a reception in the church.

The family would like to thank the kind and thoughtful staff at Schooner Estates and at Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for their wonderful care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trinity Church Memorial Fund, 36 Main Street, Newtown CT 06470, or Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, PO Box 819, Lewiston ME 04243-0819.
