To the Editor:
I support Representative Chris Lyddy for reelection because of his dedication to helping the residents of Newtown through his promise to make a more responsive government and his dedication for ensuring the protection of children, families, seniors, education, and the environment. His leadership and advocacy have served us well, earning him an A+ rating from the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters, being recognized as a Childrenâs Champion by the Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance, and being named the 2010 Legislature of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers.
However, even if I was not passionate about these issues and impressed by his tireless work to help families in Newtown, I would still cast my vote for Chris Lyddy as our state representative because as a Democrat in the General Assembly Chris has more access to power than a Republican state representative. The work of the General Assembly is controlled by the majority party, historically the Democrats. In the 2009-2010 legislative session there were 151 representatives: 113 Democrats and 36 Republicans. The majority party controls the leadership, committees, and legislative agendas. By sending a Democrat to the General Assembly, Newtown gets a more significant presence than a Republican representative ever could provide. Republicans in Hartford are marginalized. If we want to get the most out of our state representative we need to send a Democrat. It is just common sense.
Furthermore, state representatives are given leadership positions and committee assignments based on seniority. Chris Lyddy represented us exceedingly well for his first term and has gained respect within the General Assembly. To elect a Republican newcomer would be a step backwards for Newtownâs interests.
Vote for Chris Lyddy because he will have more opportunity to fight for Newtown in the Democratically controlled state legislature than Mr Ferguson ever will. Chris has the ethics and values, as well as the respect, experience, and position to represent Newtown in Hartford.
Sincerely,
Addie Sandler
