Stress And Diabetes Series At St Vincent’s

BRIDGEPORT — “How Stress and Illness Affect Diabetes” is the latest in the “Staying Healthy with Diabetes” series of free seminars for the public on coping with the disease presented by St Vincent’s Medical Center and Animas Corporation, a Johnson & Johnson Company.

The seminars, which cover different aspects of managing diabetes with the goal of living a full and active life, take place at St Vincent’s Medical Center from 6 to 7:30 pm. Individuals need not attend all of the seminars to participate.

The series continues as follows: November 9, “Counting Carbs for Diabetes”; and December 14, “Healthy Holiday Eating with Diabetes.”

Featured speaker for the seminars is clinical manager Molly Kirschner, RD, CDE, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator with Animas.

According to Ms Kirschner, the seminars will cover the challenges and benefits of activity and exercise, strategies for maintaining good blood glucose levels during activity, techniques and tips to assist in counting carbs, meal planning, breaking free from injections, and learning how to stay on a healthy diet during holidays and special occasions.

“These seminars will bring valuable information and helpful strategies to people living with diabetes in our community,” said St Vincent’s clinical nurse specialist Pat Gantert, MSN, RNC. “Many medical problems associated with diabetes may be avoided if the individual develops healthy eating and exercise patterns.”
