Newtown High School’s boys’ golf team put together a great round to capture the South-West Conference Championship, at Fairfield’s Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course on October 16. The Nighthawks had a score of 313, seven strokes better than runner-up Pomperaug of Southbury.

Nighthawk Will Lokey finished second with a score of 74 and Jack Wishneski placed third with a score of 75. Lokey made First Team All SWC and Wishneski made the All Colonial Division team. Both golfers qualified for the State Championships.

The rest of Coach Shawn Tierney’s top five who helped bring home the trophy are Quinn Kull, Josh Miller, and Andrew Goldsmith. Newtown has won the title two straight years, last year overcoming second-place New Milford. The Nighthawks graduated some key team members, including a trio of golfers who were among the top scorers in last year’s championship run.

The Hawks were dominant in going 14-0 last fall but were a surprise winner this go-around after posting an 8-4 conference record, good for fifth place behind top team Immaculate of Danbury, New Milford, Pomperaug, and Brookfield. Immaculate and New Milford both lost just one match in conference play.
