Golfers Battle Rain And Tough Competition In SWC Championship
Newtown High School's boys' golf team was greeted with picture-perfect fall weather for matches at Rock Ridge Country Club October 11 and 12, then played in the rain during the South-West Conference championship match, at Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course in Fairfield, on October 17.
The Nighthawks finished sixth in the championship match, challenged by rain in the morning and waiting for an extended delay due to standing water on the greens. When all was said and done, it was a seven-hour wet day of championship golf.
Colin Luby carded an 82 to lead the Nighthawks, Charlie Hanson and Josh Glass both recorded 86, and Carter Briggs 96; Newtown had a team score of 350.
Pomperaug of Southbury won with a total of 321. Max Pawlowski from Bethel had the match low score with a round of even par, 71.
Hanson and Luby made the SWC All-Colonial Team.
The Hawks were coming off a 165-183 setback to Pomperaug on October 11 and a 176-191 victory over Weston the next day.
