Seven Youths

Police report that they responded to the town-owned Fairfield Hills campus about 9:40 pm on October 8 on a report that suspicious activity was occurring there.

After investigating, police found seven teenage boys, ranging in age from 15 to 17, who were illegally on the premises, so they issued each youth an infraction ticket on a charge of simple trespassing. The youths can either pay a fine to resolve the matter or appeal the infractions in court on October 21.

Because all the youths charged are under age 18, their identities are shielded from disclosure by state law.

Yellow Kayak

Police are holding for safekeeping a yellow kayak that was found at Taunton Lake in July. Police are seeking to return the small boat to its unknown owner.

Queen Street

Police report that motorist Christopher Farrington, 32, of 13 Whippoorwill Hill Road was driving a 2004 Toyota Corolla sedan northward on Queen Street about 1 pm on October 12, when he slowed for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by northbound motorist Jacob Schwartz, 60, of 17 Sweet Meadow Road, who was driving a 2001 Ford Expedition SUV.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Schwartz an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Copper Theft

Sometime between late September and October 13, someone stole some copper mechanical equipment from a business on Berkshire Road located in the vicinity of Newtown High School.

 Police are investigating the theft and ask anyone with knowledge of the crime to contact them at 203-426-5841.

Three Violations

While on patrol about 6 pm on October 15, police stopped a vehicle driven by Carl Curran, 23, of Shelton near 107 Toddy Hill Road to investigate.

Police said they charged Curran with traveling unreasonably fast, driving with a suspended license, and with a seatbelt violation. Curran was released on a written promise to appear in court on October 27, police said.

Hawleyville Crash

Motorist Cara Spath, 40, of Southbury, who was driving a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta station wagon eastward near 130 Mt Pleasant Road about 1 pm on October 9, stopped for traffic conditions, after which the Volkswagen was struck from behind by eastbound motorist David Pugliese, 26, of Homes, N.Y., who was driving a 2000 Acura coupe, police said.

There were no injuries. Pugliese received a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, according to police.

I-84 DUI

State police report that at about 11 am on October 11, they spotted motorist Nancy Lombard, 63, of Brookfield driving a 2011 Porsche Carrera sports car westward on Interstate 84 near Exit 10 while swerving between the right travel lane and right road shoulder, so they stopped her to investigate.

State police said they charged Lombard with driving under the influence and with failure to drive in the proper lane on a multilane road.

After processing, Lombard was released on $500 bail for an October 24 appearance in Danbury Superior Court, state police aid.

Rocks Onto Vehicles

State police said they are investigating two incidents that occurred on October 15 in which vehicles traveling on eastbound Interstate 84, about 100 feet west of the Rochambeau Bridge, were struck by rocks.

In both cases, rocks which came from an unknown direction, struck the vehicles’ hoods and front windshields, state police said. There were no injuries in either case.

State police received the first report at 5:16 pm in which a 2008 Hyundai Elantra was struck. In the second incident at 5:29 pm, a 1996 Chevrolet K-2500 pickup truck was struck.

On-Ramp

Motorist Flavio Alvarez, 37, of Danbury was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Impala on the Exit 11 on-ramp for westbound Interstate 84 about 7:30 am October 11, when the vehicle went out of control, traveled off the right road shoulder and then struck some rock ledge, state police said.

Alvarez was not injured. Enforcement information was not available.

Dispute

Police report that they received a call about 9:30 am on October 16, alerting them of a dispute that had occurred between two males at a Narragansett Trail residence, so they investigated the incident.

Police said they charged Richard Huisking, 67, of 31 Key Rock Road with second-degree breach of peace and with second-degree threatening.

After processing, police released Huisking on a written promise to appear in court on November 1.

Danbury Man

Police said they received a call from staff at the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street at about 2:24 pm on October 13, reporting an attempted larceny there.

After arriving in the area, Big Y staff identified Paul Northrop, 30, of Danbury as the suspect in the incident, police said.

Northrop attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended at Church Hill Road, police said. Following their investigation, police arrested Northrop on a charge of criminal attempt to commit sixth-degree larceny and with interfering with police.

After posting $1,000 bail, Northrop was released for an October 25 court appearance.

Student Theft

Police report that at about 9 am on October 14, Newtown High School officials and the police’s school resource officer there learned that a possible theft had occurred the previous day in the boys’ locker room, so they investigated.

A search of a student suspect in the case turned up some checks that were missing in the theft, police said. Consequently, police charged that youth with sixth-degree larceny.

After processing, police released the student into the custody of a parent. The student is scheduled to appear in Danbury Juvenile Court on October 31, police said.

Because the person charged is under age 18, the student’s identity is shielded from public disclosure by state law.

Evading Responsibility

Police report that sometime between 5:45 am and 2 pm on October 18, some unknown motorist struck the passenger side of an unspecified vehicle that was parked on Main Street in front of Edmond Town Hall. The offending motorist then drove off without reporting the collision. The incident constitutes a case of evading responsibility. Police ask anyone with information on the identity of the offender to contact them at 203-426-5841.

Moving Violation

While on patrol about 11:19 pm on October 17, police stopped motorist Natasha Brown, 34, of Waterbury to investigate near 63 Church Hill Road.

Police said they charged Brown with driving with a suspended vehicle registration. Police released Brown on $100 bail for a November 1 court appearance.

Head-On

Police report a head-on collision about 12:52 pm on October 18 near 187 South Main Street.

Motorist Edward W. Cooper III, 31, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2002 Dodge Dakota pickup truck northward on South Main Street, swerved into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with southbound motorist Pamela Savoia, 47, of 7 River Run, who was driving a 2007 Honda CRV SUV, police said.

Ambulance volunteers transported both drivers to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. Botsford firefighters responded to the accident.

The accident is under investigation. Police ask anyone who witnessed the accident or saw the vehicles traveling before the crash occurred to contact them at 203-426-5841.

Car Vs Pedestrian

Police said that a security guard at Newtown High School received minor injuries when he was struck by a vehicle there while he was on foot at about 8 am on October 18.

Police said motorist Michael Mead, 18, of 14 Far View Drive was driving a 2010 Ford Focus sedan that came into contact with security guard Frederick Biondi, 48.

Police said they were called to the high school to investigate, but Mead had left the scene. Police said they found the Ford at Mead’s residence, but not Mead. A short time later, Mead returned to the high school, where police investigated.

Police said they charged Mead with evading responsibility. He was released on $60 bail for a November 1 court appearance, police said.

Biondi was transported to Danbury Hospital to be checked for minor injuries, police said.
