Which Plants Resist Deer?

The topic for The Garden Club of Newtown’s next meeting will be “Deer Resistant Plants for Your Garden.”

This will be a very special program for the club because the speaker is also one of its members. Brid Craddock, the owner of Craddock’s Heirloom Gardens, will be speaking on Tuesday, October 25, in the Olga Knoepke Memorial Meeting Room at C.H. Booth Library. Non-members are welcome, and there is no charge to attend.

Ms Craddock holds certificates in horticulture and landscape design. She is an associate member of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers and is currently teaching gardening classes at the New York Botanical Garden.

Formerly of Ridgefield, Ms Craddock lives with her husband and partner, Harvey Pessin, at 59 Main Street in Newtown, along with their daughter Katie. Their gable end Georgian home built in 1749 is the perfect site for their business, with 3½ acres of landscaped property and a greenhouse.

Craddock’s Heirloom Gardens is a landscape design firm and nursery, specializing in deer resistant and unusual shrubs and perennials.

Ms Craddock’s lecture and slide show presentation will discuss strategies to deter deer from damaging gardens.

Certain plants contain chemical properties which deer find repellant, other plants have leaf textures or thorns which deter deer. The talk as well as the plant list handout by Ms Craddock will focus on plants suitable to the Connecticut garden.

The program will begin at 1 pm.
